We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carol Banh Keiner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carol Banh, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest parts of scaling a business is maintaining quality as you grow. How have you managed to maintain quality? Any stories or advice?
At The Blushing Details maintaining quality is a key element for our overall company growth. and it requires a combination of Client assessment, communication, strategies, implementation of consistent processes, quality assurance inspections onsite, backup contingency plan, team training, quality control checklist, post event evaluation, understanding of cultural elements and continuous improvement. With these essential elements, it will support us in sustaining client satisfaction and reputation. By implementing these quality control measures and continuously refining my approach, I have successfully ensured that every wedding I plan is executed flawlessly, with very few breakdowns or issues. My commitment to excellence has earned me a reputation for delivering exceptional wedding experiences for my clients. In a recent case story, a distressed client who was unhappy with their current wedding coordinator sought the expertise of The Blushing Details just two weeks before their big day. The situation underscores the importance of our well-established quality control measures and processes that we implement toward their wedding in a short timeframe. The Blushing Details commitment to quality control not only saved a wedding but also reinforced our reputation as a reliable and effective wedding planning service. This experience serves as a testament to the importance of maintaining stringent quality control measures as you expand and grow our business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started out as the co-owner of a dessert business. I oversaw the implementation, operation, catering, and planning of all the major fundraisers, galas, weddings, and other social events. Soon after my own wedding—and five years into the business—my partners and I admitted that we weren’t passionate enough about the business anymore, so we decided to part ways. I knew I needed to explore more deeply the ways in which I could express my creative outlets, so I decided to start writing a wedding blog. I had always loved the extravagance of wedding planning and enjoyed doing it on my own so much that I wanted to share the work I had done. My hard work managed to rake in quite the exposure, and soon enough, friends were reaching out to me asking me if I was an available wedding planner. I felt writing a blog wasn’t enough of a career path for me, so I had a deep conversation with myself about how I could balance creativity and structure in a career, while also incorporating what I had learned from my previous experience in the event industry. After all, I had managed to combine my knowledge of the fashion industry and experience with the dessert catering business to plan my own wedding—and had so much fun doing so. I created a budget worksheet, designed a moodboard, constructed the floorplan, and researched, curated, and recruited vendors based on my own aesthetic and style. One of my florists told me she thought that I was a wedding planner due to how knowledgeable, resourceful, and highly organized I was. I have been passionate about both the creative aspect of decorating and the organized nature of planning from a very young age. That was when I realized that I could turn the activity I loved most into my career. Thus, I was able to leverage off the knowledge of my fashion involvement, passion, and previous business experience to start my own Event Planning and Design business, The Blushing Details. The Blushing Details is focused on creating an opulence, elegant, romantic, and whimsical wedding for our modern diverse clients. We are proud of offering quality service that guides our clients in creating a fun-filled, stress-free environment with flawless creativity and focused attention to even the smallest of details. As an owner, my role is the Principal Planner and Creative Director of The Blushing Details. I oversee the implementation and execution of the clients’ design aesthetic and planning. I take pride in my ability to make their vision a reality. What sets my company apart is my unique approach to our planning and design process and the realization of it for my clients. By Implementing detailed visual elements and systems, we fully bring our clients into the design process from inception to fruition. This can include digital sketching, modeling, and a vision board. We feel it helps out to be more inventive in the overall outcome and experience. I am very proud of the relationships I’ve developed with my couples over time, and my goal is to create an event that encapsulates the personality and uniqueness of our clients.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I unlearned as a Wedding Planner is the idea that there is always a fixed and singular way of doing things. I came to realize that there is always room for learning and development in this profession. There are various approaches and methods to plan and execute weddings, and it’s not always about sticking to one rigid way of doing things. Being open to different approaches and constantly seeking new knowledge and skills has been essential in my growth as a Wedding Planner.
In my journey as a Wedding Planner, I’ve encountered situations where clients had specific ideas about how they wanted their wedding to unfold. One such instance was when a couple wanted to have a parents’ dance before their first dance. Initially, I may not have agreed with this unconventional sequence, as traditionally, the first dance symbolizes a significant moment in a couple’s love story.
However, I learned to appreciate the sentiment behind their choice. To them, their parents’ dance symbolized the foundation of their love, the first love they experienced through their parents. This experience taught me the importance of being flexible and respecting the unique preferences and emotional significance that different traditions and arrangements can hold for couples on their special day. It reinforced the idea that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to wedding planning and that understanding the couple’s personal story and desires is paramount.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey as a Wedding Planner has been a testament to my resilience. I started with very little experience, faced initial setbacks, and encountered fierce competition. Financial challenges arose, and many unforeseen obstacles. Despite these hurdles, I learned from my mistakes, adapted to change, and built a solid reputation in the industry. My commitment to creating magical weddings allowed me to turn my passion into a successful career, showcasing that resilience and determination can lead to remarkable achievements that named The Blushing Details 2023 Wedding Planner of Malibu and Ventura County is a testament to The Blushing Details ability to overcome challenges, adapt to the ever-changing wedding industry, and consistently deliver exceptional results to my clients. It’s a significant milestone that highlights my passion, hard work, and commitment to creating unforgettable and opulence weddings.
