We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sumrr X a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sumrr, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes I’m completely happy as an artist, I cannot see it any other way. I remember what it was like to have a regular job, clocking in day and night. I worked 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts from Factories to office jobs.
Sumrr, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I love to tell people my name is Sumrr and the right way to spell it because it’s sentimental for me. I always ask, when you think of “Summer” what do you normally think about and they always say, good vibes, and happiness and thats what I want my listeners to feel when it comes to my music. I am a singer, song writer and upcoming producer. I started music back in 2017 but haven been singing since I was 4 years old.
I started with a full time job and doing music right after work. That was the most stressful for me. Having to turn it off and on also being in an uninspiring environment. I solved that by taking a chance on myself and moving out of my hometown Cleveland, Ohio with 1200 to my name and made a way and a home here in Los Angeles, California. That was the best decision Ive ever made! I knew I was called to be here everything worked in my favor. 3 years later I’m doing shows almost every month making great money working for myself and creating my own schedule. I’m most proud of my journey and falling in love with the process of an independent artist. This is only the beginning.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simply creating. Doing what you really love to do. Creating something so special out of your art and making a difference in the world whether for 20 million people or 1. This is about me this is beyond me. I was gave this gift simply to share.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember when I moved here and my plan was to not work a regular job I wanted to make money and create my schedule so I could have more time with music. My first day here I had an Amazon interview that I never went to. Something told me not to and I hopped on the unemployment train. It was around Covid time so it was alot of free money that was helping me fund my music and also A place to live. I was moving from airbnb to airbnb atleast for 4 months. I remember the last airbnb I had I didnt have enough and my unemployment was depleting I had to think of a way to keep making money so I started to do hair again. Something I did back at home on the side. This time I went full time. Build up my clientele and saved money to find a place and Ive been great ever since.
