We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikkita Jervey . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikkita below.
Nikkita , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
As a doula, I have the pleasure of serving moms during the most intimate, life changing season of her life. My main priority is to create a safe space for mom, and her supporting family members, so they feel comfortable while laboring. Well for the first time in my doula career, this mom chose to keep her sneakers on during labor and delivery… in the hospital bed! She said it made her feel comfortable, so she literally did not take them off until after her daughter was born! It was amazing and confirmation that even in a hospital setting, you (moms) set the tone and can do whatever is necessary to ensure comfortability.

Nikkita , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a labor and postpartum doula and placenta encapsulation specialist based in Delaware. I have three beautiful children and had three unique birthing experiences. The delivery of my last baby was the most peaceful, empowering, miraculous, and transformative experience I’ve ever had. My different birthing experiences catapulted my desire to support and empower expecting mothers through their pregnancy and labor.
I believe every woman deserves to have a doula and a peaceful birthing experience; so I love adding a little bit of laughter and a lot of love to every labor and delivery room I enter. I attribute the life I’ve been blessed to live as a wife and mother and the calling to be a doula, to my Christian faith and the peace that comes with it. My personal goal is to support every expecting momma she has the pleasure of serving with my whole heart. I recognize the vulnerability and courage each mom takes as they enter this new chapter of motherhood and celebrates them accordingly.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I honestly am still building my social media presence, as I’ve only been posting consistently for the last three months. But this journey started as a challenge from my therapist. She asked me, do you love your business? Yes. Is it like your baby? Yes. If something were to happen to any of your children wouldn’t you drop everything to tend to them? Absolutely. Okay so treat your business, and the marketing of your services, like its something you love, like its your baby, and prioritize posting daily! And so I did! I realized that once I stopped overthinking and worrying about what to post… it became easy.
Then I met with another doula friend, whose posts I loved and she helped me categorize the four pillars of my life that I want to share with the world: Doula/placenta encapsulator, Christian, Mom, Wife. And that just allowed me to add even more content.
So I would say to those building like me to write out your top 3-4 pillars that you want to share, how often you want to share (something reasonable and doable for YOU), create a content calendar and just fill each day with something/anything (do at least a week in advance at a time)(dont overthink this part… what do you already know how to do that falls within your pillars), and then execute.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Man, thank God for therapy. I had to unlearn or overcome the fear of rejection. This is a root that stems from my childhood, that I unknowingly allowed to steer my entire life.
But being able to identify it, acknowledge it, accept it for what it was, and deciding to not allow it to steal any of my future was a game changer. I had to really come to terms with the fact that I’m not for everyone.
Rejection is a part of life… but its not the end. Asking myself what the worst that will happen if this one person says no, or rejects me… and realizing the after effect is not as dire as my imagination would have me to believe, really shifted my perspective.
