We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Victor Wilde a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Victor , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
There are always meaningful projects happening and n my career. My favorite was the 2018 LAFW show we did at The Petersen Auto Museum. My brand Bohemian Society closed Fashion Week with the most inclusive, eclectic show I’ve ever produced. Our backstage was legend. All the models from the other shows came to hang with us because we were getting hype. The only show having fun! It was interesting for me to replace Cross Colours as the closing show due to the fact I wore the brand as a teenager.
Victor , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I never went to Fashion school. I learned Fashion through growing up on the streets of Brooklyn. If you didn’t look good, you’d get made fun of so as a young guy I created a strong sense of personal style. I never thought that I would be in Fasshion until I came to California but my entire life people told me I should be in fashion as I was named best tryst entrepreneur in my junior high and high school yearbook, when I came to California, I saw people were selling their wares on Robertson at a store called Lisa Klein, which was at the time the number one celebrity store and I saw that with these people were doing wasn’t that great so I thought hey I can do better and so I did, and I came up with the concept of Bohemian Society and executed my first line of T-shirts and within three weeks I was selling in the window of that store on Robertson and it all just stem from there . At the same time I did not even know how to make a T-shirt so I was buying ready-made shirts from American apparel and using them as canvases and then I wound up doing the same thing with jeans and blazers and whatever I could get my hands on because I didn’t really know how to make clothing yet and two months into selling at Lisa Klein. I was offered a spot in LA fashion week at Smashbox studios Davis factor believed in me and gave me a slot so suddenly I had to create an entire line of clothing so I just did what I could took a lot of vintage stuff and just reworked it as pieces of art and within two weeks I made over 100 pieces and debuted it at a fashion week soon after that, I got a call from some stores in Soho New York and I took my samples back home because that’s where I’m from and started writing orders and I just went like a traveling salesman door-to-door with my samples and wrote a bunch of orders and my first orders all immediately in one day sold out and it’s just been going from there and for the past 20 years, Bohemian Society has been a staple and the Los Angeles fashion seen, and we have had many imitators completely trying to rip off our aesthetic, but all of them are gone and we are still here
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creating is the most rewarding feeling in my life as someone who is a born creator I am the most happy when I am in that zone I live to create, and I create to live, and that is a beautiful thing that I refuse to live without
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I am an independent small brand that has been on the map for 20 years. I have always punched above my weight people always want to work with me not for money but for my sheer creativity and street credibility I have vested mini competitors that have a lot more resources than me many have tried to copy what I do, but nobody can do what I do the way I do it, and all of those people are gone and Bohemian Society still stand strong.
