We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Gardner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
At the peak of the Covid lockdowns when everything was shut down in Los Angeles, including all the entertainment, I started a comedy show on my cousin’s huge balcony called “A Show On My Cousin Balcony”. There were a few months where ours was literally the only show, that I know of at least, taking place in the city. Despite fear gripping the nation and people frowning upon the idea of people gathering, the show was packed every month. People were so happy to have a place they could come laugh, hang out, and enjoy themselves. It really meant a lot to people and gave them something to look forward to. In a scared Covid world, I produced a successful monthly event, which I’m sure many people would frown upon. But it taught me I can go against the grain and do as I please and be successful, which I think is one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned! After lockdowns were lifted, people continued to attend the show despite there being other things to do! It’s a lesson that will remain with me the rest of my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I think the arts was always in me, but I wasn’t tapped into it as a child. It wasn’t until a friend of mine came upon an amateur comedy show where anyone could perform on Craigslist. My friend sent it to me and told me I should sign up. Me being the daredevil I am and liking the challenge, I obliged! I wrote some material, invited some people and surprisingly had a great set for my first time! I immediately knew it was for me. Got into acting from there and I’m still at it today! My personality and nuance bleed through everything I do and it’s quite interesting for me and those who enjoy me to witness. I just want to offer people an authentic good time, and an original experience, whether it be through my stand up, my acting, my internet presence, or a simple conversation!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve had to pivot my career recently realizing that generally speaking, just being funny or good at stand up isn’t enough. When I observe peers of mine who have really made strides in the last few years. I find that they all have some type of successful platform where they’ve built a fan base, whether it be a podcast, YouTube/IG/TikTok videos, acting, etc. These individuals were all extremely funny beforehand, but these platforms have allowed them to leverage a fan base that allows them to tour around the country. So now I’m putting more time and energy into the internet and social media, which I should have done a long time ago!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Hmmm there’s probably a few, but I’ll choose one. Growth. Things that once seemed advanced come easy. People you looked up to starting out, you start to view as your peers. People become fans to where they support and engage in whatever you’re doing. You develop the confidence of holding your own. It’s beautiful. I’m sure this applies to any skill or industry!
