We were lucky to catch up with Pouria Safa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Pouria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with the idea for my real estate photography business through a series of experiences and observations. Initially, I worked in the mortgage industry and later became a realtor in 2008. As the market began to shift, I faced the challenge of finding alternative ways to make a living.
In 2012, I decided to explore real estate photography as a part-time endeavor while I figured out my long-term plans. At that time, I noticed that many realtors were relying on their smartphones to capture property photos and were hesitant to pay for professional photography services. Moreover, there weren’t many competitors in the field.
Determined to succeed, I dedicated myself to honing my skills and working hard. Eventually, real estate photography became my full-time occupation. Along the way, I started incorporating additional services to meet the evolving needs of realtors, such as drone photography, virtual staging, dusk photos, and even video on green screen for effective marketing purposes.
One significant turning point in my journey occurred when I unknowingly took a photograph of a property in the Los Angeles area. Little did I know that this property had a rich history of celebrity ownership, including notable names like Kenny G and Kate Jackson. The property gained attention and was highlighted by the Los Angeles Times as a historical celebrity property in 2015.
This unexpected exposure further elevated my reputation and opened doors to new opportunities. It showcased the quality of my work and solidified my position as a trusted professional in the real estate photography industry.
Through perseverance, adaptation, and a commitment to delivering exceptional services, I have been able to thrive in an ever-changing market. My story exemplifies the importance of identifying market gaps, providing high-quality services, and continuously evolving to meet the needs of clients.

Pouria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Indeed, as I previously noted, my journey into real estate photography began in 2012. A pivotal moment in this journey was when I seized the opportunity to acquire the premium domain realestatephoto.com during an auction. While the purchase did come at a substantial cost, it has proven to be one of the best investments I have made.
At realestatephoto.com, we offer a diverse range of services designed to help realtors showcase their properties in the best light. Our offerings include interior and exterior photos, drone photography and videography, virtual staging, dusk or twilight photos, 3D Matterport, MLS Virtual tours, and marketing videos. In addition, we also provide flyer design and retractable banners standing 6 feet tall. We are constantly exploring and adding new services to meet all the marketing needs of realtors.
Being a realtor myself, I understand firsthand what my fellow realtors require to effectively market both their listings and themselves. This unique perspective allows me to tailor our services to best meet the needs of our clients.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
There are various sources and strategies to acquire new clients, and the effectiveness of each can depend on the nature of your business and target audience. Here are some common sources that can help you attract new clients:
1. Referrals: Word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients can be one of the most powerful sources of new business. Encourage your existing clients to refer your services to their contacts, and consider implementing a referral program that rewards them for successful referrals.
2. Online Marketing: Establishing a strong online presence is crucial in today’s digital age. Utilize search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to improve your website’s visibility in search engine results. You can also invest in online advertising, such as pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns or social media advertising, to drive targeted traffic to your website.
3. Content Marketing: Create valuable and relevant content, such as blog posts, articles, videos, or podcasts, that can attract and engage your target audience. By providing helpful information, you can position yourself as an authority in your industry and build trust with potential clients.
4. Social Media: Leverage social media platforms to connect with your target audience, share valuable content, and engage in conversations. Identify the platforms where your potential clients are most active and tailor your content and engagement strategies accordingly.
5. Networking: Attend industry events, conferences, trade shows, and local business networking events to establish connections and build relationships with potential clients and industry professionals. Actively participate in relevant online communities and forums to expand your network.
6. Partnerships and Collaborations: Identify complementary businesses or professionals with whom you can form strategic partnerships or collaborations. By combining your resources or expertise, you can reach a wider audience and generate mutual referrals.
7. Direct Outreach: Proactively reach out to potential clients through personalized email campaigns, cold calling, or direct mail. Research and identify individuals or companies that match your target client profile, and customize your outreach to demonstrate how your services can benefit them.
Remember, the best source of new clients may vary depending on your industry, target audience, and the specific goals of your business. It’s important to track and analyze the results of different strategies to identify what works best for you and continuously adapt your approach.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, as I mentioned, I initially started real estate photography as a temporary source of income while I figured out what I wanted to do. However, with the right plan and marketing strategies, and by not limiting myself to a specific area, the demand for real estate photography quickly increased. Of course, this led to more competition, but because I had already established myself as a seasoned photographer and had a wide footprint in the industry, I was able to compete with new companies. As my business grew, I began to add new services, and it eventually became my full-time job.
