We recently connected with Morell Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Morell, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I think the hardships I went through while I was a teenager really helped me grow as a person. If I didn’t go through those tough times, I wouldn’t have any of the content that I released over the past 11 years. I’ve worked so hard to prove myself as a person of color and someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community. While I may have been naive during my earlier years about how the business works, I made my mistakes, learned from them, and continued to master my craft. My fans are so important to me because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m proud of myself for continuing to work hard even while I was struggling to make things work. Starting my career with zero experience was actually a blessing in disguise as I was a clean slate, able to be anything I wanted without any strings attached. I’m in charge of my own music and that is very important to me as well, as some artists do not have that luxury due to restrictive contracts. I will continue to show the world what I have to offer and make sure they know to follow their dreams and be the best person they can be!
Morell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I come from a small town called Bellport on the south shore of Long Island, NY, but my journey has taken me to NYC, where I’ve made a name for myself and now to San Diego, California. Over the past 11 years, I’ve worked tirelessly to establish myself in the music and television industry. As a person of color and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve faced many challenges that fueled my creative journey. I started with zero experience, which allowed me to be a versatile artist without constraints from restrictive contracts.
I’m proud to say that I’m in charge of my own music, giving me creative freedom that not all artists enjoy. I’ve had some rebranding such as switching from just doing cover songs, to R&B/Soul, to now EDM/Electronic music. The success of my EDM music and acting has allowed me to be featured on popular TV networks such as Fox and shows like MTV’s TRL and VH1’s Love and Hip Hop: NY, expanding my reach across the world, especially in Europe. This success has resulted in my songs being picked up by major record labels such as, Revealed Recordings and Universal Music Group. My music is a reflection of my experiences, and I’ve used it to advocate for POC and LGBTQ+ rights.
My fans have played a vital role in my success, and I’m grateful for their support. I’ve learned from my mistakes and continued to refine my craft. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that I’m dedicated to my craft, my advocacy, and the message of following one’s dreams. My journey from a small town to big cities is a testament to what’s possible when you believe in yourself and your talents.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society must understand that being a creative, especially a musician or singer, requires a lot of hard work. I think what really makes me scratch my head is, people will not support local talent by spending $5 on a ticket but will spend hundreds of dollars to see their favourite artist. We must get rid of that mindset. While the industry is changing and indie artists are beginning to get more recognition, they are vastly underrepresented in the media. The best way for society to support our local or small scale artists is to stream their music, share their music with friends, go to their performances, and purchase merch as that’s how a majority of artists would make their profits. Also, society must also recognise that every artist is different and to not always expect the artist to be like what they see on television.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being an artist is that I can share my music with the world. I love that I’m able to put my memories in the form of a song and have others relate to it. While I can say that I didn’t have the easiest life, I’m so happy I went through those struggles so this way I’m able to provide advice to others who might be in the same situation or experiencing something similar.
