Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Niuvis Martin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Niuvis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started truly evolving my skills at the early age of 7 by taking private oil painting classes.
I always made it a point to take art and music electives throughout grade school.
I later chose to attend an art college that took my expertise to a whole new level. I feel that I did everything in my power to progress in art and speed the learning process simply by never stopping.
The most important skills I gained were in oil painting as that set the stage for nearly everything I do now.
The only obstacles that stood in my way was growing up and having to start working full time. It took so much time away from my creation process and still does to this day.
Niuvis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Niuvis Martin, I’m a Cuban-born Miami -based multidisciplinary artist who specializes in Makeup, Photography, Videography, Painting and Illustration as well as Music.
My main career focus right now is my Makeup business “Beauty by Nuby” where I provide my customers with a personalized package of artistic looks, photographs and prints solely based on their vision.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is that I’m willing to go the extra mile for my clients and their artistic visions, even if that means getting my hands a little dirty or losing sleep. We flesh out every detail imaginable to leave no room for mystery or doubt so that everyone is on the same page. We build a relationship where they will always feel safe and comfortable. As well as create an environment where bringing out their inner confidence becomes the main focal point. My clients usually always tend to leave my sessions feeling refreshed with a new outlook and confidence boost.
I’m most proud of my hard work, dedication, and consistency to never stop believing in the power of art despite every adversity thrown at me constantly. My growth is evident within my entire artist journey.
The goal of my brand is to show people how beautiful they really are on the inside and amplify their inner beauty so that it is conveyed on the exterior where it becomes more tangible.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Even though I recognize that art is a skill, it’s also good to point out that some people were just born with a natural ability and flow to create what they desire. A fiery passion for creation that burns deep within. I feel that I’m one of those people who were born with a brush in their hand, obsessing over art.
That being said, it is very rewarding when you meet other like minded individuals who actually understand you , respect your work, wish to collaborate with you and support you constantly.
It completely moves me when my art or music makes an impact so strong on others that it literally becomes the reason why they still exist. It is a very powerful thing when your art saves lives.
An obvious rewarding aspect to being an artist is when my work actually sells and I can make a decent living off my art.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started out as an oil painter, painting on canvases and flat surfaces. I thought I could make a career out of painting in that way until I took black and white photography in high school and college, which by then I fell in love with the medium and wanted to become a photographer instead. I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in creative photography.
Once I graduated I decided to use my photography skills to be a freelance concert and portrait photographer. I struggled to make ends meet as a freelance photographer unfortunately and decided to focus on music and playing concerts instead.
I had a very traumatic incident where I completely disappeared off social media and shows for 2 years and I went into complete hermit mode. That period of time was absolutely crucial for me because i had no distractions. I was able to take on so many new and different skill sets and interests I otherwise would never have had the time to learn.
During 2017 and 2018 , I developed a liking to skin care and makeup. It was something that I never really gave too much importance to in my earlier years. I spent hours upon hours, glued to Youtube watching countless makeup videos. It became an obsession to the point where I started buying trending makeup products and trying it on myself. I learned everything I could and practiced on myself everyday.
In 2019 my skills were developing much stronger than before, I later had the opportunity to do makeup on 2 friends just for fun at a girls night event I had orchestrated. This was the pivotal moment in my artistic career. I had a major epiphany; I could use every single one of my learned skills and translate them with makeup. It felt so right that I knew this would be my calling in life so I decided to keep offering free makeup sessions to my friends as practice.
By the end of the year, I became so successful that I was already getting paid clients. I had very high hopes for 2020. Unfortunately, as we all know, 2020 didn’t turn out quite how we wanted it, in fact it was a complete disaster and halt on the mission I had in mind for myself as a new makeup artist. I lost my job in March of 2020 and all source of income. Depression hit me hard but that did not stop me from pursuing my dreams to become a makeup artist.
I needed to prove to myself that I was worthy enough of this title and that I could achieve my dreams despite the state of the world and my lack of stability, So I worked diligently, day in and day out for months, creating insane makeup looks for my portfolio. This was truly when people starting noticing my artistic skills.
Once the world opened up again and people felt safe to come out and enjoy the things they normally would, I was getting clients again and slowly rebuilding the little I had already developed beforehand.
Fast forward to September of 2021, where I actually applied every skill I learned in addition to learning a new one; videography. I produced, directed and shot a music video for my band where I also incorporated my makeup & photography skills and also worked with hair & wardrobe.
I have now come full circle and can literally do anything I put my mind to. I am officially unstoppable.
