We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beth Scarano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beth below.
Beth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I was 50 years old when I founded LaunchPM after investing more than 20 years building a career in the corporate world. While my initial thought is I wish I’d started my business sooner, going out on my own when I did was the right time for me personally and professionally. I had worked for large construction companies and learned what I wanted and did not want. Instead of remaining frustrated with the lack of opportunities, I decided to create my own. I am grateful for the time and experience I had working for others because it got me where I am today.
Waiting to start later was not even a thought, and starting sooner wouldn’t have been advantageous. I was ready when I made the move to go out on my own. In addition to my corporate experience, I had the unique experience of working for a project management firm that did much of what I do today. The culmination of my previous experience prepared me well for starting my own company. I was also at a place in my life where I had the flexibility and the time to devote 100% to developing and growing my business.
Beth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The culmination of my previous experience prepared me well for starting my own company. I was also at a place in my life where I had the flexibility and the time to devote 100% to developing and growing my business. I built my career in the commercial construction industry working for a variety of large corporate companies over the course of twenty-five years before going out on my own in 2012.
Today, I employ a team of project managers that work with me on the company’s portfolio of more than 60 commercial construction projects in various phases of construction. From healthcare and commercial office to manufacturing and nonprofit operations, LaunchPM is responsible for overseeing projects from tenant improvements to ground-up builds throughout the Southwest and beyond.
Since the company’s inception, LaunchPM has achieved 30 – 40 percent year-over-year revenue growth during its ten years in operation. I am extremely proud of the growth we’ve achieved with my team, and I am honored and humbled by the industry recognitions we’ve received as a company. In 2021, I was recognized by the Phoenix Business Journal with an Outstanding Woman in Business award and in 2023 as a Phoenix Titan 100; both of were especially rewarding.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Construction project management is traditionally a male dominated field and when I started my company, I believe I was one of the only woman-owned and operated firms in Greater Phoenix. That reality forced me to be more resilient. I have spent more than 25 years in the commercial construction industry, while raising three children as a single parent. Like others with a long career in the industry, I had to weather the economic fluctuations and downturns, which required learning to adapt and pivot. When things changed in the market, I took on new challenges, sought opportunities to develop my skills and evolve my career. To succeed in this business you need to learn resilience.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
We work with companies and clients in a wide variety of industries providing project management solutions. A big part of our job is talking with our clients to determine the best plan for their project. One of the most valuable lessons I had to unlearn as a consultant and adviser is to become less reactive and to become a more proactive problem solver. Rather than responding to clients with a statement on how to approach a situation, I’ve learned to take a step back, listen and ask questions more. Practicing this approach helps bring others into the process and makes them part of the solution. While we are hired for our expertise, experience taught me that it works best when you have client buy-in. Input from others leads to happier clients, which ultimately leads to long-term success.
