Mak, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?

The most important lesson I learned at my previous job was that you can’t be a leader and also be liked by everyone. Sometimes in leadership positions you have to put friendships aside and do what’s best for the company. You have to do your job regardless of who might not like it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

The name of my brand is Leader Of Me. Leader Of Me means being able to enjoy life while also having discipline. In order to achieve anything significant in life we must have self discipline. So me and my team created a clothing brand as an outward expression for what we hoped would become an internal transformation for the people we would eventually reach. You have to lead yourself before you can lead anyone else. Right now we are in the process of rebranding from just being a clothing brand to showing people things that could actually help you achieve the goal of becoming a leader of yourself. I also make music that sometimes reflects this reality.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I had to unlearn that nobody owes you anything. People are not obligated to support you. You have to have a plan and a purpose in order to have long term engagement. This caused me to take a pause in my business and figure out what my purpose truly was.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

My reputation was built mostly through consistent social media engagement. We were constantly posting about the brand on a daily basis which created curiosity. The message and the name of the brand grabbed people’s attention and made them more interested in the brand.
