Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Azita Ayagh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Azita thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think in order to be successful in my industry, it is all about making connections, working hard, working as a team, using your creativity, and maintaining relationships. I have been a freelance editor for over 20 years and most of my business comes from word of mouth and who I meet along the way. I always try to keep relationships strong with clients and coworkers as well.
Azita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a freelance video editor as well as an artist. My paintings are primarily abstract and I do pet portraits as well. I am kind of new to the art world as I started painting during Covid. It is a talent that I didn’t realize that I had! But I am so excited that I discovered this talent because I absolutely love painting and really hope to be able to continue and grow as an artist. I have been editing in the television industry for over 20 years and I still love what I do. I am able to use my creativity daily, which has always been something I am grateful for. I studied film at Georgia State University and got a job as an assistant editor in Atlanta shortly after I graduated. After a couple of years, I took my skills to NYC where I worked for a company called Red Car and then started freelance at Viacom. The early days of my career consisted of editing shows for MTV and VH1. I learned so much during this time and feel so lucky to have had this opportunity. I came back to Atlanta for a little while and then moved to Los Angeles. Being a freelance editor has allowed me to move and work on many projects in different cities. Which I love to do!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation is that I am a fast and creative editor. I am able to work well alone and I focus on my own instincts when telling a story. I am not the type of editor that struggles with making revisions. I know that is part of the process and I always welcome collaboration. I feel this is what makes a stronger end result.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is making connections! Who you know is definitely helpful in my industry. I love meeting new people and always try to maintain solid relationships with the people that I have worked with.
