We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaclyn Moy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jaclyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I love this question. I believe the people you surround yourself with determines an immense amount of success in life. When I first began my career, I was a ‘lone wolf’. The results were positive but it was not very fulfilling. I did everything on my own and thought the only way to be successful was to work hard with my head down. Fast forward to my life now, I have the strongest network of creative & non-creative people I’ve ever had. We inspire each other, call each other out, etc.
Without a team (of people who lift you up), you lose out on other perspectives, learning from each others mistakes and most importantly, celebrating each others ‘wins’.
Jaclyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a digital creator, editor and creative. It all started with my dad’s camera when I was 12; the rest is history. I started taking my career seriously at age 20 where I went to historical Los Angeles nightclubs to shoot live music, got an internship photographing at a fashion brand and shot content for musicians and models.
A couple of years after, I worked my way to photograph and film NASA’s James Webb project until it launched into space.
Since then I’ve worked as a senior editor for projects such as Jack Ryan, Dead Ringers and Making the Cut.
Currently my two favorite gigs have been in production with Spicy Fruit YouTube channel and Nordstrom.
I’m really proud of my whole career thus far. I’m also enjoying work-life balance more now than ever.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Community. My journey started out as a way for me to express myself through creation while also make a living. It still is, but I’ve also been so lucky to see and feel how the projects I work on impact others as well. Whether it be with other creatives or viewers/audience, the goal of my journey is to form that safe space to ease loneliness, promote education and create a life time of memories that will surpass our time here on Earth.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Mostly everyone who knows me knows that my dad passed away in 2021. I am fairly vocal about this loss in my life. When that happened, I lost all inspiration for my craft. I thought I had retired my career as a creator for good. The whole situation was extremely traumatizing for me in many ways; my entire life changed in literally 20 seconds of time.
I had to be patient with myself to grieve and rest while simultaneously figuring out how to create and find inspiration again.
One day it just hit me that I was ready again.
Staying patient with myself was the hardest part of that journey. Creativity cannot be forced. And with that time away from my craft, I kept learning from working in other parts of the industry(s) which has ultimately benefit my craft even further.
I believe life has a way of putting you right where you are supposed to be; you just have to trust that.
