Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anahid Boghosian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Anahid, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
the most common problem I think artists face today is representation. The art world has changed so much over the past 10 years that keeping up with being relevant takes up too much space and time. I as an artist like to be with my thoughts, and surround myself with inspiration before starting a piece, then i like to immerse myself in that process for months. Todays world has too many interruptions. “Did I post today?” “Did I check my emails” ” did I respond to the comments ” this all takes time and it is all time away from the process of creating,
Anahid, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been painting since I was a child and my happiest memories are of me doing thing that were creative. This was a pastime that was instilled in me by my father. He was a sculptor that turned his craft into a business, creating architectural ornamentation for movie sets, hotels and other various industries.
I pursued a career in design, from fashion to furniture and received a college degree for just that. After many years of jumping from job to job and starting a family I began to paint again at home for myself. I felt it was a great creative outlet and i starting having so many opinions on things and felt this was the only way to convey them. I started to remember how it felt when i was a student having exhibits and thinking i was contributing something to the world with my points of view.
As my art career was developing so was my work and the outlets of the work itself. I grew into creating Installations and creating works that was not juSt 2D.
As time went on, and my children went to college, I discovered myself looking for other creative groups and joined a few collectives and CO OP’s where i realized that I could use my works to create other product lines. I have developed a gift line and am happy the aside from the gift lines I do produce prints of my originals. I believe that ART IS FOR EVERYONE and that original art pieces can come in many different shapes and sizes.
I also have a profound admiration for found objects, especially books and magazines. What I do not talk about a lot is that when i graduated High School I thought I was going to be a journalist. I love to write. The written word was sacred to me and I found it disturbing that people started throwing away massive amounts of books and magazine Technology was making them obsolete and that genuinely hurt me, so I started collecting them. This just naturally transferred to the use of them in my works.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe my work speaks to the not so perfect. I believe there is beauty in the old and tattered things in life. I gan only hope that my work elevated the found objects that I use to things of beauty. I want to create nostalgia in my works that make the viewer look deeper and hopefully see the story that is being told. My Stories alway celebrate the imperfectly perfect.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when you watch someone look at your works and have a reaction. Good or Bad that reaction means you made them think. It is doubly rewarding when they like it so much that they want to take it home with them. The fact that something i created brings another person JOY makes me elated.
