We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucas Roelen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucas below.
Alright, Lucas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I owe so much of what I have been able to accomplish to my parents. Having a mother and a father who brought very different perspectives to the table, I was able to develop an ability to be able to view everything I do or that happens to me from several perspectives. My mother was always the more patient one and my father is the one that moves with haste in a decision. Having these two perspectives have enabled me to become a better creator and person in many different ways whether I am on set for a project and need to make an executive decision on something or making plans to hang out with friends, my parent’s values have stuck with me throughout my life and will continue to do so.
Lucas, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I originally got into the world of entertainment/Hollywood as most do, I wanted to become an actor. I had always been able to captivate an audience and attention from others so I knew I needed to go into this business as it all came naturally. I started this journey when I was fifteen but didn’t truly take it seriously until I turned seventeen. At this point, I was a senior in high school, and right as I got my agent and what I thought was the beginning of everything, COVID happened. Everything shut down and I hated it. I decided that I needed to produce my own content to get my face on the screen so I wrote, produced, and starred in multiple short films over two years. I eventually wanted a change and through the falling out with previous partners I was determined to find a mentor…a mentor who has done it in this business. After calling a hundred producers in LA I got the chance to speak to Zac Weinstein. We talked for five minutes and the next thing was I became his assistant. After a year and a half of working with him, I learned and met so many connections in the executive and film distribution world. Over time, I longed to be back in front of the camera creating so I met with an old friend and launched a comedy production company called Unrelatable. We launched this channel and company just this past June and have been putting out content ever since. This new endeavor has truly felt like what I am meant to be doing which is producing terrific comedy content and making people laugh. As of right now, this has been the focus and will continue to be as the company has a very bright future.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing in the world creating, producing, and financing content has been seeing other people take true joy out of those products. Seeing a theater burst out laughing, crying, or screaming as a filmmaker has got to be one of the most rewarding things ever. By doing this you can leave an impression on somebody that sometimes words can’t even do. That is what the most rewarding thing has been for sure.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As of now, my following still is nowhere near where I think it should be, but that can be said for anybody. The key in building an audience is being consistent and specific with the content that you create. People won’t follow you the first time they see you. They won’t follow you the second time they see you. They will follow you the third time…just maybe. What I’m saying is keep posting, keep creating, and keep going because social media favors consistency and specificity with content above all else. After all, they want users to be engaged. If you can think like a consumer, then you will be just fine.
