We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gemm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gemm below.
Gemm, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Each member has their own story but for me, Peter, specifically, I started falling in love with music when I was very young. There are photos of me constantly playing drums on pots and pans and my favorite toy was a drum. I thought for sure this is what I am gonna do. But the hard no way from my parents sent me in another direction. My dad was and still is a rocker. Showed me everything I could ever dream of. We used to blast KISS Alive II whenever we went for a drive. Then one day I see a live recording of KISS. And there he was, Gene Simmons, signature axe bass spitting blood. And I knew, that’s what I want to do, I want to be a rockstar.
My uncle got me a bass for my 10th birthday, 22 years later I am still just as in love with that instrument if not more. It had a bass, Hal Leonard how to play bass book, and Spreading The Disease by Anthrax CD. I was hooked, my uncle got me into bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. my dad was KISS, Poison, Def Leppard, my brother showed me punk and hip hop, my mom showed me Prince. I was engulfed. I couldn’t get enough music.
I spent hours and hours in my room playing every famous bass line I could find. I couldn’t get enough of this instrument. And I loved to sing.
I was heavily involved in theatre and musicals. Both on stage and behind the scenes.
And all that lead me here, singing and playing bass for this incredible band. A dream come true.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think for me it’s all about how I always come back to music. No matter what nothing makes me feel the way music does. In every facet I just can’t shake the feeling that I need to be playing music for a living. It’s the only thing that really makes sense and keeps me going. I thin the rest of the band feels similar in that. That all we know is music and that’s our love language for sure.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I love books. Okay well I just started loving books this past year or so. One of my favorites is What to Say When You Talk To Yourself. I was reading it before bed every night and while I was in therapy. I always struggled with confidence, and believing in myself. This book taught me there was a lot of behaviors I had to unlearn but also how to give myself the patience and power I was giving everyone else. For years I believed I wasn’t good enough, in looks, in music, in fashion. It seemed like no matter what I couldn’t feel my best. And a lot of that behavior came from trauma. Lots of bullying and others trying to make me something I wasn’t. But now I am me. I am comfortable. confident, and friendly. I do my best to make others feel seen, heard, and safe, because I have experienced that myself. That being said it actually really helped me within the band. It helped us all open a line of communication that knows we’re a family, that we are here to keep each other safe, lift each other up, and challenge ourselves and each other to do our best. It’s helped us open ourselves to change and really dial in who we are as a unit.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think you’ll hear people screaming until they are blue in the face, but support local. Of course not every single artist out there is for everyone, but find one you love just as much as the mainstream massive artists and support them just the same. It means the absolute world to us when we have people who we see all the time, who share our posts, leave us comments, buy a shirt etc. I’ve definitely sat down on the stage after a show and had a few tears from all the love people have poured in to us. It’s a goal and and dream to be on the world stage. We want nothing more that to share our art with everyone we possibly can. Come to a show, hangout and talk, grab a drink, and let’s be friends. We love maing music, but we are nothing without those who support us.
