We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scott Fowler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I think one of the most important things to learn as an actor is that people can and will take advantage of you if you allow them. Just look at the ongoing WGA/SAG strike for a great example and what they/we are fighting for against the “big” production companies. It’s really no different on a smaller scale. For example, when I first started I had this grand idea that my “WWE background” was going to make finding/getting acting work easy. Short version, it did not. All I was getting in the beginning was offers for blurry/no lines/no credit roles on true crime recreation shows. If you enjoy doing those, awesome, get that on set experience, but from my personal experience they were very vague about what you would be doing and often “pumped it up” I guess to ensure you would actually take the booking and/or show up on set. They were all disappointing experiences, but an argument could be made that I needed them to learn and appreciate the good ones. Since doing a few of those over the first couple years in acting I’ve learned to really dig in and ask questions and make more educated decisions about whether the gig I’m about to do is going to move my career in the direction I want or take me a step back. Moral of the story, know what you’re worth and get what you’re worth!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been in the entertainment industry for the better part of 20 years, first in pro wrestling and now acting. Though I was able to accomplish a childhood dream of wrestling for the WWE (multiple times) thru pro wrestling, the memories of that business, for me, are often muddied by a lot of the darkness it brought into my life by the path it took me down. Acting has been a blessing in the sense that I have looked at it as my chance for “redemption”, and have already been able to “top” myself on more than one occasion thru gigs I’ve booked in acting that, to me personally at least, are a bigger deal than anything I did in wrestling. So mission accomplished there, but I’m still hungry and am constantly looking to take my career to the next level and actually have quite the hot streak going right now as we speak. Stay tuned to my IG for all of the latest and greatest projects I’m going to be a part of, it’s a pretty darn impressive list. @scottfowleracts
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m very open about my struggles with addiction (alcoholism). I think it’s incredibly important to give testimony about it and every time I do I have at least one person approach me afterwards openly sharing about their struggles and looking for resources that could help them (which I gladly provide and have a fairly long list of). Alcohol controller my life from 2008-February 2015. By the grade of God I have been sober since February 15, 2015, and am very proud of the life I’ve built since then. I went from living out of my 2006 Nissan Sentra with 3 pennies and a ball of lint in my pocket to a first time homeowner, success in business (from entry level to Manager in the fitness industry), financial stability, and most recently, a husband to my best friend who I never would have met had I never broken the chains of alcoholism. It’s just a better life. I’m always willing to talk and/or lend a helping hand if you or a loved one are struggling with addiction. I don’t know everything but I know what helped me, and it may just help you too.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I pride myself on my work ethic, professionalism, and dedication to whatever I put my name to. For example, acting. When I’m booked for a project, the team involved can always rest assured that they are going to get the very best “Scott Fowler” showing up on set, and more and more Directors/Producers/Casting Directors are starting to become aware of that. This isn’t just performance wise, this is health and wellness as well, I always say I “show up in shape” and anybody that has worked with me can attest to that. As my IMDb profile says, I’m a consummate professional with a commanding camera presence ready to be an asset to YOUR production. Believe that. :)
