We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Lee Secrest. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Hair Daze. Anyone who knows me knows I am a complete sucker for silly puns. I make punny jokes on the reg. That being said, I really wanted a pun in the name of my salon! I also wanted to stand out from the “this word & that word “ typical name for a business. Hair Daze does just that! When you get your scalp massaged & a new look you can feel pretty dazed! As well as having a great hair day! It also fits the mid-mod/70s motif we have going on inside!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I moved to NYC right when I graduated high school to embark on a career in the hair industry! After landing my dream job at a midtown Paul Mitchell salon in the city, I missed San Diego and I was time to come home!
I started my California career downstairs in the building my business is currently in 10 years ago and literally rose to the top! ( Hair Daze is upstairs! )
I specialize in effortless low maintenance hair color & razor haircutting! Those are my favorite services to provide since I love showing people to embrace what they have and show them how to work with their hair instead of against it.
Don’t get me wrong, I can absolutely slay a unicorn rainbow color as well as a classic bob or long layered haircut too!
I think what keeps my clients coming back to me is my absolute genuineness. I adore making human connections, learning from others in all walks of life, providing a safe place for people to let go and be themselves, and most importantly telling you “no” if you want bangs and I know you’ll regret them.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Knowing nothing good comes easy, if it did everyone would be doing it. Everyone has to pay their dues and be humbled to get to where they want to be, there aren’t any shortcuts. For me that meant relentlessly working for 4 years straight, 10 hour shifts, 5 days a week, 3 days off a year to be available and build my clientele.
By doing that I was able to meet so many people, personalities, did so many different styles, colors and even made some mistakes to learn from to know what I enjoyed and wanted to do more of!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic of course. I had one of those careers that was impossible to perform from a distance.
Being a working hairdresser my whole life then when Covid hit it forced me to slow down. It taught my clients they can like the way they look if they see gray hairs. It taught me how important my time was with family I had been missing and I think it taught us all how to pivot and be at peace with it.
