Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Korsak. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kate, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Humans are creative beings, designed to be uniquely passionate individuals. For me, writing has been a love of mine since elementary school, and since then my enjoyment of fantasy worlds has only grown. I find that being creative brings me closer to The Creator, and leaning into that has allowed me to write stories of worlds elementary school me couldn’t have imagined.
I believe everyone has the ability to be creative, and I’ve built my social media for the purpose of building community with other creatives. Weather a writer, artist, cosplayer, dungeon master, or fantasy cartographer, the love for fantasy is something that should be encouraged. I’m always learning from others, and I hope they can find the same support from me!
As an author, my hope is that readers can escape in my stories, finding new perspectives and adventure within my words. As a mapmaker, I want to bring the worlds of others to life. I find so much joy in watching other’s embrace their creativity and grow in what they love.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up, I spent most of my childhood waiting for Peter Pan and hunting monsters in the woods. I read books about fairies, talking animals, and kids who could fly. When I wanted to write books of my own, my fourth grade teacher encouraged every one of my stories. The Baby Chocolate Chip Cookie and the Squirrel Who Did Math became my debuts at nine years old, and my love for fantasy grew as I discovered the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
As I got older, I fell in love with Middle Earth and Narnia. The worlds of Fablehaven and Avatar the Last Airbender filled my mind, and eventually, I decided to make my own. At thirteen, I built the world of Frayoneth, filling it with stories of lost princes and magic stones. It was amateur at best, but when I was finished with the first book, I knew I wanted to write more.
It was at this point, after learning and growing in my craft, that I wrote what became my debut novel: The Curse of Ragoh. I made a fantasy map for the world of Akinar, and began sharing my map creations with TikTok! I found a community of world builders and fantasy lovers who shared my love of fantastical worlds, and I had the privilege of seeing myself become the author I always wanted to be! I now make custom fantasy maps for authors and TTRPGs, as well as continue to write books I plan to publish in the near future!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creative professions, though extremely rewarding, very easily lead to burn out and discouragement. Unlike other professions, we are passionate about what we do, and if we’re not seeing results, we can be quick to ridicule ourselves and our work. It can become especially difficult when we’ve turned down other things to focus on our creative passions. Making time for things like writing and world building can seem foolish or wasteful, but in order to succeed we have to put time and effort into our creativity.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a beast no one can tame, and I won’t pretend that I have. I do know, however, that the best way to build a social media presence is to focus on community instead of followers. Build relationships with people and support one another whenever you can. It’s much easier to grow as a team instead of solo. I also suggest starting with a specific niche and building from there. Most social media influencers started with a single series that made them popular, and eventually grew to the point where they could expand their content and people were still interested. People don’t know you yet, so start by creating a common interest between you and your followers.
