We recently connected with Nestreya Isi and have shared our conversation below.
Nestreya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
You know, it’s funny. Since I was a young child, I have always wanted to pursue a career in the arts. However, because of particular circumstances, I was misled by what my father’s side of the family believed was best for me, and for a very long time, I believed them to be correct. Up until my second year of college, I had a switch in me. My family encouraged me to start physical therapy, but I wasn’t comfortable with that idea. I was unable to remain still. I prefer to think of myself as exercising creativity through self-expression. Because creativity is what enables me to properly express my thoughts and manage my emotions, I want other people to feel the same way that I do. I wanted to act on my own behalf and lead the life I want to lead. And if that involves music and dancing, that’s OK too. When the moment is right, everything will work out.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Nigerian-American entertainer, musician, dancer, actress, and model. I’m well recognized for loving music from the African diaspora. I am well-known for dancing to other artists’ songs before I started making music. which gave me numerous opportunities, such as appearing in music videos and on stage with DJs and artists, and having dance courses, which I intend to continue. Which led me to decide to pursue music, something I had always wanted to do but had been cautious about for a while out of concern that the world would hear my voice. Knowing that my father will soon pass away was the catalyst for my decision to conquer this fear. I said, “Let me just achieve what I want right now.” Sadly, my father passed away in 2018, the same year that I dropped my debut single, YE BABA. This will just encourage me to pursue my goals even farther. I have passion, I always go with my heart, and I never let anything stop me. I am a high achiever who thinks that one’s personal standards reveal their character. relying on my gut and continuing to be inspired by optimism to accomplish my objectives. I am aware that you must have the courage to show greater fortitude in tough times because doing so only makes you stronger. I stay motivated by exercising self-control and using my creativity.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Because of the actions I take to pursue my goals, I view the way I operate as innovative. For instance, I might post dance videos on my social media platforms. But is that all I’m doing, you ask? People are unable to observe what takes place in the background. I act a certain way because it’s profound. It comes from my parents’ depression since they never truly lived the lives they wanted to live. Instead, I want to serve as a positive role model who proves that everything is possible in life. Why not make the most of it as we only have one life to live People who aren’t creative might find it difficult to comprehend that I don’t always proceed in a straight line and that ideas frequently develop through trial and error. Everything we do is intimate and profound. What I want to show the world is much bigger than what most people believe it to be.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
2018 is a year of transition. I was so frail that year, when I was going through a spiritual awakening, and my father died. I was experiencing an emotional roller-coaster. Before my father died that year, I chose to pursue a career in music. I was terrified, but it was what I really wanted to do. Something inside of me was telling me to stop running away from my worries, especially since my father is going to die soon, and I want him to share in my accomplishments. Regardless of what was going on within, I resolved to utilize my willpower to work on myself. I started working out, took stretching seriously, changed my diet, and attempted to get into the music business by contacting several producers I knew but received no answer. God will provide, so I refrained from feeling depressed and instead concentrated on the resources I do have right now. began teaching more dance and producing more content. But as it turns out, God heard my prayers and sent someone to me, telling me straight up that they saw an artist in me and would like to work with me.
