We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful memyself&vi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vi below.
Vi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve been obsessed with music and singing since I gained consciousness. I always knew my future would be filled with music in some shape or form. I started with dance classes as a child, then moved onto voice, piano, and guitar lessons in my preteens. Vocal training really helped me gain confidence as a singer and excel in the skill. After high school, I went to college for a year to study music business, which helped me gain a better understanding of the ins and outs of the music industry. I’m very grateful for the time I spent in school as I met lifelong friends who share a mutual understanding and love for music. With that being said, continuing to go to school was not in the books for me. I left after completing a year and chose to soul search while honing in on my songwriting and developing my artistic vision. I took the leap into creating music seriously when I was 19. At this point, I had reflected on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and music was the only answer.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After college, I wanted to embark on a journey of self discovery to figure out who I am going to be in this lifetime and how I was going to express myself. I dove head first into songwriting with barely any knowledge about it at the time. I started making demos of original songs on Garageband on the Macbook that I was using for my studies. My first batch of demos were all self recorded in my bedroom. Songwriting turned out to be a significant outlet for me because it allowed me to unload all of my emotions. It was a therapeutic process that helped me understand my feelings and navigate life. I kind of just threw myself into music and knew that I would figure it out along the way. It is crazy to look back and recognize how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned. I released my first project in 2018 and gained an incredibly supportive fanbase from that. Each release since then has been very intentional and I began building a solid and trustworthy team around me. I’m most proud of the community that I’ve built around my music and the connections to supporters around the world that relate to what I’ve been through in the form of songs. I draw my writing inspiration from real life experiences and challenges that I go through; it’s helped me find the people that really understand and relate to life’s challenges that we all go through. I want to continue creating music that resonates with people. I hope my music is an outlet for them, similar to how music has always been a healing method for me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way you can support your favourite artists is through simple gestures like sharing their music with your friends, buying merch, streaming their music, following them on socials, and attending shows. Every little bit helps and is seen and appreciated by independent artists :)

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My favourite part of being an artist is receiving messages from people who have connected with my music. Small gestures like this go a long way for me and remind me why I chose this path in the first place. It’s a reminder that creating music is way bigger than writing about personal experiences and turning it into a song. I love that my lyrics can reach people and help them get through a difficult time or evoke some sort of emotion. I love connecting with my fans and hearing their perspectives or how my music has helped them.
