We recently connected with Dr. Mitch Scarmardo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Mitch, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I always knew I wanted to establish my own sports medicine practice, but was never sure if I had the right skill set or mindset to do it. Thankfully, my mentor and partner Dr. Ben Bumguardner saw something in me as a young chiropractic student and wanted to team up to open the second location of Alpha Sports Performance Medicine. After working at our College Station office, my family and I made the move to McKinney, Texas to begin the process of opening our new clinic. From researching the community to getting plugged into gyms and sports teams, it was a long yet rewarding process. We began by treating athletes for free to show the value in our service, and create a presence in the community. This allowed us to build connections that have become pivotal in our clinic. It’s always a challenge trying to establish yourself in a new community, but once you find the right people who are “movers and shakers,” it spreads like wildfire.
The advice I would give to young professionals is to just put yourself out there. There’s no such thing as putting yourself out there too much. Meet anyone and everyone you can, because you never know who you may cross paths with. Even if they aren’t interested in your practice, they may know someone who is. As long as you keep the idea of serving others at the center of your heart and intentions, nothing can go wrong.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dr. Mitch Scarmardo, and I am the Medical Director and Sports Chiropractor here at Alpha Sports Performance Medicine in McKinney, Texas. We are a multidisciplinary clinic that offers sports chiropractic, physical therapy, massage therapy, and pelvic floor therapy to athletes and movement-minded people of all backgrounds. Whether you are a competitive athlete, weekend warrior, or looking to move well into your 90s, our goal is to get you back to doing what you love.
What sets us apart is our integrated approach to care that involves not only all the different providers in our office, but as well as the client themself. We consider all facets of health including physical, social, psychological, and emotional. By addressing all of these components and treating our clients as people and not a diagnosis, we can truly impact life and performance. We also follow a constantly evolving, evidence-based style of treatment. In the health profession there is always new research coming out about the latest and greatest intervention, and our providers take the time to learn what has evidence to prove it can help clients and how we can integrate those into our clinic.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Absolutely!
Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman is a great book for leaders in their company. It gives so many incredible tools to integrate immediately within your workspace to become an effective leader. From your workstyle as a leader to how to interact and communicate with co-workers, it truly teaches you how to be a better businessman/woman.
The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek is my latest read that I love. It discusses the huge impact that changing from a finite mindset to an infinite mindset can change your business and your life. Business is about numbers, but it’s also about creating a legacy of impacting lives both within and outside of your company. The mindset shift that it creates is revolutionary and if every leader in business thought this way the world would easily change for the better.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
For me, it has really been a combination of things both inside and outside of the clinic.
Inside the clinic, it has been all about providing an outstanding experience and a service that truly impacts lives. We take our culture and environment very personal, and want our clinic to be a fun and welcoming place. One that clients walk in and are excited to be here and know it’s going to be the best 45 minutes of their day. We also want them to leave knowing they were treated like a professional athlete by the services they were given and the way their body feels when leaving. We believe that we have the best environment and highest quality services that genuinely help people, and that is what allows our patients to go out and spread the word.
Outside of the clinic we love to support and stay involved in the community. Whether this is working events, hosting workshops, or supporting our athletes at their events. we love being a part of something greater than just the clinic. Being an Alpha (what we call our clients) isn’t just about being a ‘patient’ here. It’s about being surrounded by a community of providers and people that want nothing more than you to succeed at doing what you love.
