We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Villalta recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jenny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Everything was ignited by my husband and son. My husband and I agreed to me being a stay-at-home mom, regardless of loss of extra income. However, when I saw how much harder he was working, I had a deepened desire to contribute financially in any way I could.
I started a few side hustles that brought in some money. However, it was nothing that I deeply enjoyed doing or could see myself doing for a long time. Then, one day I came across a video on Youtube about selling on Amazon through private labeling. This sparked an idea to create my own product. I had no idea how to, but I felt compelled to TRY!
I first started off with a private-label mindset. I would walk throughout my house and look at random objects and ask myself how I could make that product better. Nothing really motivated me to begin, though.
Well, one day I was playing an alphabet puzzle game with my son–a game I had played countless times with him. All of a sudden a thought came into my mind. I thought about buying him a cursive alphabet puzzle. Immediately, I grabbed my phone and checked on Amazon so that I could buy it. To my surprise, this product did not exist on Amazon or Etsy. I got SO EXCITED. From that exact moment, I knew exactly what I wanted to create.
Jenny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Yeah, of course. Well, I have been happily married to my greatest supporter and best friend for the last 7 years. Four years ago we began our journey into parenthood and have been blessed with two happy and healthy children. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom I had the privilege of being a Science Teacher. I loved being a teacher. My years in the classroom will forever leave an impression on my life. I am so grateful for those years because it truly molded me into the person I am today. Never in my life did I think I would be a teacher or an entrepreneur. Yet, by the grace of God, here I am!
Right now, I wear many hats, as most first-time entrepreneurs do. There is a lot of work that goes into bringing an idea to life. I am really proud of the progress I have made so far, and I owe a lot of this to my faithful supporters in my product launch group on Facebook. Currently, I am working on sourcing my product from Central America. Our hope is to have this product in everyone’s home soon! I encourage everyone to follow me on Facebook and Instagram to be a part of this process.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a social media audience is definitely a monumental task in itself. To be honest, I felt extremely overwhelmed at just the thought of having to build an audience because I had been off of social media for almost a decade. When I say I felt left in the dust, I mean I felt LEFT IN THE DUST!
Nonetheless, what has been working for me is interacting with my audience through my private FB group. I share the most details of my progress with my group and receive the most interactions from people there.
The participants, more like contributors, in my group are amazing! They tell me what their expectations are, what they like and don’t like. They give me their honest opinions and I love it!!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have more of a mentality that I had to unlearn.
The thought that dreaming big are for brilliant and creative people is something I believed. I’m just a wife. I’m just a mom. I’m just a teacher. I’m really nothing that exciting.
I felt a rebuke from the Lord. I can do more, I can be more. Why not try something new? My mentality RIGHT NOW is: Jesus is coming soon. Might as well go big or go home! I have nothing to lose.
