We recently connected with Yasmine Singh and have shared our conversation below.
Yasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have always enjoyed writing but I never thought I could make a living doing it. And so I worked in all different fields and tried my hand at different businesses, too. I wasn’t happy but I was trying to be practical. I thought being a writer was just a dream. But when I became a mother, I realized that I had a lot to say and I needed an outlet. One day I started blogging and ended up connecting with a lot of other moms who could relate to everything I was going through from sleep deprivation to post partum depression. Then I started following parenting websites and magazines. One day I pitched an idea for an article and the rest was history. My article caught the eye of an editor who asked me to be a contributor for a popular online outlet. I started freelance writing and did so for a few years. Now, I’m a shopping writer.

Yasmine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am currently a shopping writer. I enjoy finding new and interesting products to share with readers. I also enjoy finding and sharing small businesses. I am also working on my first novel and hope to have it published one day. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, watching horror movies, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with my husband, daughter, and dog.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a writer is really hard, you’ll get a lot of rejection emails and hear “no” quite a lot. But, rejection doesn’t mean you should quit it just means you have to keep looking for your audience. If you’re passionate about something, I believe it’s for a reason. Everyone has that one thing that they love doing, and it’s amazing when you get to do it for a living.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think it’s important for women to take up space in journalism and the writing world in general. I remind myself often that my words are important whether I’m writing about parenting, lifestyle, or shopping I can be inclusive, thoughtful, and encourage positive changes. I read a lot of magazine when I was a teen, and it’s great to see how much more positive, inclusive, and raw writers are nowadays. A lot of change has happened and is still happening, and it starts with us.
