We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Damon Richardson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Damon, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?

As a graphic designer I have been able to make a living, firstly working for design consultancies as a full time member of staff until I felt I had the confidence to step away from the security of full time employment (and all the benefits) to pursue my own path and find my own clients.

Damon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I studied fine art at art college which in the UK is called a Fine art foundation course this is a year long course and prepares you for your degree course. I went on to study graphic design in Newcastle and then moved to London to start my career and have worked as a freelance designer for the last 10yrs (career so far has lasted 25yrs) My main area of expertise is in creating identities for large and small companies as well as individuals. My approach is one of simplicity. paring ideas down to simple form and arrangements which informs how I approach my painting. I stopped painting after art college and its only in the last 5yrs that have rediscovered my love of painting and now have a studio at the bottom of my garden and my goal is to become a full time artist.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)

I don’t like NFTs, I haven’t seen any that are interesting and I do grow tired of being asked if canvas’s can be bought as NFTs.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

The design industry has changed so much – the resources available to design are mind blowing. I started my career on a big bull Mac and used Syquest disks!
