Alright, Christian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I started photography about 7 years ago with just a passion for photography. After purchasing my camera I started off by taking landscape photos and pictures of my daughter. Shortly after I started to get inquires for weddings, portrait work and events. So I continued photography part time as a passion to make some additional income every so often. It wasn’t until 2019 when I was laid off by my job with 3 weeks til Christmas. At this point with so much uncertainty, I took some time to reflect on what I really wanted to do. This is when I discussed with my wife about starting my own business and expressed how I wanted to use my camera full time to make income. I knew I wanted to start something that could be consistent and was potentially scalable business model. This is when I came up with Real estate photography especially since I have always loved architecture, and interested in real estate industry. I knew this would be a great niche to get started in because the potential recurring business you can earn. I took a few months to study the art and learn the business side of things as I wanted to do everything the right way. I get my LLC paperwork at the end of February 2020 and couldn’t be more excited to get started. 2 weeks later Covid lockdown happens and all real estate operations in my state came to a complete stop. This didn’t hold me back to continue to network with people I knew were in real estate and their peers. I also started to reach out to air bnb hosts to develop relationships there since they were still operating. This strategy helped my business grow in the first year even with lockdown mandates. Fast forward 3 years running a 6 – figure real estate media business built 98% on referrals and repeat business.

Have you ever had to pivot?
It was the start of my business launch and 2 weeks later Covid lockdown goes into full effect. This caused all real estate operations to stop. During this time I was on instagram reaching out via DM to every local real estate agent I could find introducing myself. This was very challenging as no one was sure how anything was going to work out and how long the market would be locked down. Some people would decide to maybe relaunch after lockdown, as it was just too challenging. This caused me to start to broaden my search outside of real estate agents. I started to reach out to interior designers, air bnb hosts, and worked on my online presence. Made sure my website was well designed and all social media accounts were ready to go. I developed a relationship with an interior designer who introduced me to one of my first big clients that turned into over 100 photoshoots within the first year. If i decided to let Covid lockdown hold me back I wouldn’t have been able to grow my business so quickly and develop the relationships that I have.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My business is about 98% referral based. Make sure you go above and beyond for your clients, provide quality and value. Continue to network with people in your niche and continue to strive to get better at your craft consistently.
