We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lanna Parker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lanna below.
Lanna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Having completed my undergraduate studies at Purdue University and earning a Juris Doctorate (law degree) from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, I think its safe to say my 19 year long educational journey has given me valuable insights into the system.
One significant change I would advocate for is a shift in emphasis from mere test-taking to practical application. Throughout my academic career, I’ve seen countless instances where the large majority of the material studied for exams proved irrelevant after graduation. While the countless exams I’ve undertaken have undoubtedly developed my ability to perform under pressure, I believe that a more balanced approach, focusing on hands-on practice and real-world skills, would better equip students for success in their post-educational endeavors.
I also believe that life skills like personal finances, filing taxes, and even household maintenance should be integrated into the curriculum. While memorizing the quadratic formula and parts of a cell may be necessary for a science or engineering expert, the majority of people will never apply this knowledge in their careers (unless perhaps they are a contestant on Jeopardy!) These skills are universally valuable and can significantly contribute to students’ overall success and well-being, regardless of their chosen paths.
If it was up to me, I’d implement an education system that balances practical application with essential life skills to better serve students so they can adapt easier to the challenges of the modern world post-graduation.
Lanna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a San Diego real estate agent. I hold my B.A. from Purdue University. In 2015, I received my Juris Doctorate from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego and received the American Jurisprudence Award for Contract Law. The combination of my enjoyment for transactional law and my love for the San Diego lifestyle lead me to pursue my career in real estate. My contract interpretation and negotiation skills have allowed me to complete complex real estate transactions.
When I’m not working with clients, you can find me on the golf course. I’m also an avid snow-skier and travel to some of the most sought after mountains around the world!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I specialize in the Downtown San Diego market. I’ve lived Downtown 10+ years, went to law school Downtown, and know Downtown like the back of my hand. I can speak to the Downtown lifestyle well, and it goes a long way when it comes to helping clients and navigating real estate sales in the Downtown market.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals! I can’t thank my clients enough for their amazing referrals!
