We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Monday-Gomez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I had been helping other internet stations with promotion and interviews was having fun and wanted to do a live radio show no station would let me contribute for that only podcasts/pre-recorded shows this was in 2009. Since that was not what I wanted I moved forward with a friend to start our own internet station to help bands worldwide be heard. That didn’t work out for me as bands were being pushed aside who deserved airplay. That is when I decided to just venture off on my own. In 2011 I started building Whatever68 Radio on a blog later moving to a website with whatever68radio.net, I later bought whatever68radio.com and whatever68.com. I play all the DIY/independent artists that come in on my Saturday show I also do live on air interviews and sometimes helping touring bands find shows. I also write interviews for Punk Globe Magazine to help even more bands be seen. I just try to help as many indie projects as possible bands, actors, producers whoever needs me.

Lisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The love of independent music got me and keeps me going. Whatever68 Radio helps indie bands be heard/seen, we have live on air shows of all kinds of music, we also have a 24/7 auto DJ that is full of worldwide indie artists. We bring you free yearly compilations that you can get on Bandcamp under Whatever68 radio and PP Promo records that’s my independent record label. We are here to help artists with anything we can including helping find shows for their tours.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Contacts is all about contacts and promoting your project any chance you can, be active on social media go out meet the public let them get to know you. Always have business cards on you hand them out ask people/clients to tell everyone they know about you, you never know if they know someone who may need your services.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I had first open competition was rough all men who thought I couldn’t make it a year (going on 12) They did everything they could to try to stop me and close me down including lying about me to the public and my team who at that time most ended up leaving due to it, I just got a new team kept promoting kept going out to events meeting people showing them I’m not that person they are saying I am.
