We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danielle Babcock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danielle below.
Danielle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I sometimes wish I did start sooner. I first picked up a camera 18 years ago. Back then, there wasn’t the education there is now for photographers so I didn’t pursue it because I didn’t know where to start/how to make it work. I will say, had I started sooner, I’m not sure what my business would look like today. Having my daughter played a huge role in what I do today. I’m motivated to pursue my dreams 220% harder because of her (and now her brother too). Having my kids also drove me to work on myself, mindset etc. I think those are equally if not more important than a lot of technical things to learn about running a business. If your mindset isn’t right, your business won’t run well. So I’d have to say, I wouldn’t start it sooner, or later but at the same time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first picked up a camera at 14. The journey here has been a long one. I became obsessed with other people’s work, took film and digital photography classes. Almost went to school in Massachusetts to a photography school. I went as far as to visit, meet a potential roommate but stopped short when I couldn’t sign the big loan on my own.
Still, I shot my first wedding in 2011. I put my camera down and my head down and starting doing what I thought I should do and pursued a “real” career. It wasn’t until I myself decided to get married and was searching for my own wedding photographer in 2017 that made me dive back in.
These days, I am obsessed with creating a more compelling story than the last one. I was once told by one of my second shooters that I’m “picky”. I would go as far as saying I’m neurotic because I’m obsessed with my work and telling my couples wedding story with all the big supporting characters in their lives/story captured too.
I’m most proud of my film work and the wedding galleries I’ve been producing this past year that flow beautifully for each couple.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Read all the books on mindset and then keep reading and rereading. The hardest thing about being a business owner is not the creative part as much as it is the mindset part. Some favorites of mine:
Sell or be sold
Anything and everything Brene Brown writes
You are a badass at making money
Eckhart Tolle: A new earth
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The photos I create for my couples will outlast myself and them and live for generations.
