We recently connected with Rei Ramirez and have shared our conversation below.
Rei, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
It has been a major process, from begining with thinking that my talent alone would get me there, to finding out that hard work and deication is equally as important if not more. Also surrounding myself with people that believe in me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been an artist as far back as I remember drawing animals on paper. So naturally I was bound to find some sort of creative profession. I Started in 1999 in the Art Institute of fort lauderdale in a career in Graphic Design, really not knowing or understanding much about the field. I just felt as long as I can create and be able to make a living off of it I was good! But after I received my career in Graphic Design. I found my calling was more towards fine art, portraits and animals, then when I found murals, I found I could create large scale art around the city and build relationships with passer bys, I continued that realm. I prefer working with Nature organizations and positive causes: Beautification projects and environmental causes. I provide creative work of portraits and animals for small to large businesses, and very interested in traveling and creating my art especially murals.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I have learned that talent alone is not all to be a successful artist. The work I put in and the time to build a large body of work is the most important thing to become successful. Early on in my career in art, I would see many artists; which I felt in my opinion, had less talent than me and were thriving. I could not understand why. Now I see, they put in the time and it paid off. Many past great artists said it before: the most important part is top show up to the studio and do the work, just keep busy creating, the rest will fall into place. Its a lesson I am applying more and more to my career in art, but one I wish I would’ve a[plied earlier.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To try and harness my inspiration when it comes and capture the feeling of the human realm. Emotions, sensations, feelings. Using techniques I have learned through my experience in art and design. To Capture imagination from my youth and bring it to life in color and paint. To be able to travel and paint and meet other like minded people establishing positive and profound relationships through my work and ideas. To establish an audience of collectors who really feel what im trying to achieve with my work. To create art that moves and touches my audience. But also inspire others to create. To help nature organizations through my art and to help them achieve their initiatives of helping to build a cleaner earth and education of the youth.
