Darrian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects is “Abstraction Distraction,” a project that serves as a personal avenue of expression. It relies on a spontaneous and instinctive approach, allowing pieces to evolve organically. A creative process that offers me a source of liberation and solace. The resulting artworks are pieces that are open to individual interpretation, highlighting the diversity of human perspectives. This project facilitates self-reflection, presenting undefined shapes that viewers can imbue with their own meanings. “Abstraction Distraction” offers a chance to engage in an inner dialogue or share thoughts with others.
Its significance to me stems from its innate authenticity. Recently, I’ve expanded this concept into a coloring book titled “Abstraction Distraction: Volume 1: A Unique Coloring Book for Stress Relief and Mindful Art,” exploring the dimension of color. Coloring the pieces adds another layer of interaction, fostering a deeper connection with each work and oneself. To me, this engagement with the world symbolizes personal growth and can represent a source of pride. Sharing this experience with others enriches its value even further.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an Atlanta based creative with a love for all forms of photography and design. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in a vibrant Caribbean home, my upbringing in a diverse urban backdrop exposed me to myriad art forms, cultures, and dances, fueling my journey toward an arts degree. It was during my studies that I eventually found my talents and discovered my profound connection to the essence of art.
After attempting to make a career out of being a creative, I swiftly realized my preference for personal expression over corporate confines. Opting to chart my own course has since freed me from creative constraints, propelling me onto an open-ended journey of boundless possibilities.
Diving deep into the worlds of photography and design, my current passions encompass a profound exploration of introspection. Through my lens, I capture moments that unearth a newfound sense of confidence in my clients, while my design projects beckon contemplation and self-discovery.
In the realm of design, my latest creation, the “Abstraction Distraction” coloring book, has become a source of immense joy and satisfaction. This venture has ignited my creativity and vision, prompting me to envision not only a children’s edition of the book but also a set of bespoke coloring pencils that harmonize seamlessly with the product.
What truly sets me apart is my refusal to confine my creativity within boundaries. My capacity to conceive a diverse array of products, each unique in its essence yet still resonating with my identity, defines my creative approach. Often characterized as eclectic, I strive for both my creations and my life to be a testament to this trait. I am steadfast in my belief that just as life’s experiences fuel personal growth, my creations too should evolve continually, reflecting the same transformative journey.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think what society can do to best support artists is to provide more opportunities to seamlessly integrate art into the fabric of cities and towns. It’s imperative to recognize that art exists within every facet of daily life. Whether its for function or aesthetic purposes, everything requires a touch of artistry. Currently in America, I believe there is a prevalent cookie-cutter ideology that is dominating society. Some of the easiest examples can be found in the housing and music sectors. Everything is following a template. A conformity that is driven by profit motives rather than genuine passion which results in a cheap monotonous product. Nobody is looking for the unique diamond in the rough but rather what is quick and easy. This effectively leaves little to no room for creativity to thrive.
I think it is easily overlooked how important art is by non-creatives. When people explore new places, it’s the cultural richness and ambiance that captivate them. Yet, culture thrives through the arts, an aspect often relegated to the background. Ironically, placing creativity and art to the forefront cultivates remarkable innovations, driving societal progress. A thriving creative environment is symbiotic, benefiting all. Allocating more resources to the arts not only nurtures the next generation to think outside of the box, but also enhances even the most routine activities, infusing pride into communities. In short, prioritizing art generates a vibrant environment that fosters innovation and enriches the human experience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or a creative person lies in its compelling journey of self-discovery. When you’re an artist, the pivotal inquiry of “why” inevitably surfaces from the audience. Everyone wants to know the story behind the painting. That story becomes a focal point which also serves as an entryway to introspection. And although questioning one’s existence is very common, it is intrinsic to the creative process. It is a path that not only exposes us to scrutiny but it also transforms us into both the creator and the spectator. At its core, a creation is something that transitioned from thought to tangible reality. And because the things we make are something that came from us, that also means it is apart of us. To me, this means the act of creation becomes a conduit to embracing our true identity, which will inevitably leave a positive mark on our lives.
