We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charles Brantley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charles, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
The problems that I face in my artistic journey, I can honestly say, are not unexpected. As a matter of fact, I am surprised when things go easily or smoothly.
I studied architecture at the University of Houston in 1999 through 2004. I didn’t finish, but I learned a great deal of design theory and history. The most important thing I think I became aware of is being surprised with criticism in jury judgments even though I thought my design was great. I anticipated flaws in design as soon as I began sketching from that point on.
To this day, I keep possible imperfections in mind when I begin to make something. However, I still welcome the discomfort of development if it means a more refined design.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure. I am a digital designer. I have a passion for improving my audiences style, mood, understanding, and even lifestyle. I studied graphic design from UofH to HCC to SNUH. I even intend to study more in a post grad program soon.
I am Houston Tx. born and bread, but am enthusiastic about gaining more international experiences through the understanding of art and art theory. What type of art you may ask? I love digital on screen art, sculptures, and on canvas printing or painting.
I aim to offer these mediums on brantleydecor.com to reflect my own interest as an artist and to provide a platform for other art enthusiasts to find new works for themselves.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have strived to contribute to the artistic inspiration that every person inspires to have. I want to create art to engage curiosity and even a sense of pride in the viewer. This is not an easy task. The challenge is reaching those who want to learn about new work.
As of now, I don’t have a big influence and it can be disappointing. I work hard to build and sustain my foundation, not just as an artist and producer, but as a father and husband.
The more interesting part still is the aspiration to grow even if I am able to surpass that foundation. The real goal is to somehow be satisfied with even great success. I have begun a sense of meditation through music and art. I want to find that sense of peace at this stage of growth.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I decided that I could even more about the craft of graphic design, I went back to school while working. That is incredibly challenging. I even endeavor to continue my education while working. You could say that I am a gluten for punishment, but I am a gluten for knowledge. I finished with a suma cum laude in bachelor’s in graphic design, but for particular reasons, I am inspired to continue my education.
