We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Honesty B. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Honesty below.
Hi Honesty, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating the entertainment industry as an attractive Black woman presents its unique challenges. While beauty can come with its advantages, it becomes problematic when individuals fail to see beyond appearances. This issue extends to the persistent unwelcome advances, unprofessional behavior, and a lack of proper channels for recourse. Unfortunately, such behavior has become normalized within the industry, making it even more challenging to address. Moreover, the presence of women who are willing to compromise their integrity to advance further perpetuates this problem. It’s disheartening that talents, intelligence, and potential contributions often take a backseat to one’s physical attractiveness. Refusing to succumb to these pressures can sometimes lead to the withdrawal of support from those in positions of influence.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a versatile creative individual, encompassing roles as a singer, songwriter, actor, musician, and a fashion-forward enthusiast. Additionally, I excel as a script supervisor and music supervisor in the TV and film industry. My professional singing journey began during my college years at FAMU around 2012, encouraged by inspiring professors.
I’ve been instrumental since the 6th grade, primarily playing the trumpet, but I’ve also expanded my skills to include the French horn, guitar, keyboard, and bass guitar. While I don’t claim mastery in all these instruments, I have a solid foundation. Music has been a constant presence in my life since the age of five, fueling my dreams of becoming a prominent singer. Although my confidence waned with age, a transformative experience touring with Drumline Live rekindled my passion. Now, my goal is to bring joy through performance and music.
My educational journey led me to Full Sail University, where I studied Entertainment Business focusing on music supervision in 2013. Despite my first music supervision opportunity not arising until 2020, which aired on Aspire TV, I’ve always had a keen interest in film and television, paying close attention to both music and continuity. A fortuitous tweet about continuity errors led me to the world of script supervision, and after diligent research, I began shadowing on a short film in 2019.
I’ve primarily worked on short films as a script supervisor until the summer of 2022 when I received my first call to contribute to a feature film. This opportunity has allowed me to establish meaningful connections, venture in front of the camera, and even incorporate my musical talents into film projects. Script supervision has truly become my avenue for making things happen in the world of entertainment.
Have you ever had to pivot?
At the outset of 2020, just before the pandemic emerged, I had a promising opportunity lined up as a resident performer at the bustling Atlanta restaurant, Negril. This venue consistently drew in a diverse crowd, providing me with a platform to reach a wide array of people while performing alongside a live band. I held high hopes that this gig could potentially catch the right person’s attention.
However, as lockdown measures were implemented, everything came to a standstill. While I wasn’t devastated, I realized I needed to explore alternative avenues to share my music. I initially turned to social media for live performances, but regrettably, it didn’t gain much traction.
Then, a turning point arrived when I received a call to serve as a music supervisor for a short film set to air on television. This opportunity brimmed with excitement, as it allowed me to include one of my songs in the film, marking the first instance of national airplay for my music. From that moment on, I shifted my focus towards the realm of film. This pivot has not only enabled me to incorporate my music into the projects I work on but has also facilitated connections beyond my wildest dreams.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most gratifying aspects of being a creative is serving as an inspiration to both my peers and the younger generation. It fills me with immense joy to receive encouragement from those who cheer me on, affirming that my determination inspires them to persevere. Whether it’s the impact of a song I’ve sung or a video I’ve created that brings happiness to others, these moments serve as a wellspring of inspiration that propels me forward.
Undoubtedly, there are moments when I’m tempted to surrender, but my heart remains resolute. However, it’s the genuine recognition and appreciation from others, acknowledging my contributions and efforts, that forms an integral part of my journey, fueling my motivation to keep going. Thank you for my flowers 😊
