We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christy Kioko. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christy below.
Christy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
Growing up in Seattle, I always wanted to be a part of a community that loves to create and support one another–whether that’s through music, art, creative visions, events, etc. I started networking around the city when I moved out of my parent’s house in 2021 and realized there was a beautiful community of creatives, yet we were all so scattered. So, last summer, I approached a few of my closest friends (Hannah Swan, Cindy Yang, Surya Oberoi, and Trisha Hoy) about throwing a party to bring a few of our favorite creatives in the city together.
What was meant to be an unforgettable one-time event made a big impact, sparking connection, content, and creativity at a level we had never seen before. Some people went viral, some people met their best friends, and everyone got to meet someone new. In a city known for the “Seattle freeze”- where people stayed in their own cliques or kept to themselves at social events–this was huge. That is how Saturn Social Club was born. And we have been growing ever since. Our first event had 150 guests. Now, our network has expanded to over 2,000 creatives, making our network the largest digital creator network in the Pacific Northwest. Seeing the love, inspiration, and friendships born from our events has made this ongoing project super meaningful to my life. I am honored to have brought my friends together for this great cause.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am what you would call a multi-passionate creative with the mission to inspire, impact, and serve. People know me from different things: my work as a model, singer, content creator, humanitarian, speaker, and, more recently, as the co-host/producer of The Style Series and co-founder of Saturn Social Club.
I graduated Cum Laude from Northwest University in 2022 with my BA in Marketing and a Minor in Business Management. During my time in college, I built my resume with Nordstrom, Tory Burch, and Amazon. I gained a love for fashion I never knew I had until I got to be creative with it as a stylist, and realized it was the perfect industry for me. I also love the art of creative storytelling. Over the last three years, I have worked with photographers to bring visions to life as a model, but I also knew I wanted to dig deeper and have a blog where I could share stories and think pieces on fashion. So slowly by slowly, I would post my work as a model and stylist, then eventually The Style Series came to be when I connected with my business partner, Hannah Swan.
I got into content creation around the time we started The Style Series, a digital talk show featuring creatives, designers, models, athletes, and anyone who loves fashion. Video production is where I get to express my creativity the best, so I enjoy making short and long-form content for my social media pages. I have a YouTube channel where I post vlogs and podcasts, but Instagram is where I like to post short videos and photos of my recent work and events. The Style Series has been my pride and joy to work on alongside my team. I was promoted to Executive Producer, where I oversee and edit our team’s content, manage our pages and content flow. Our mission is to uncover the local and global fashion scene through a series of interviews.
Not many people know I am also a vocalist and have sung around the world in my lifetime. I sang in choir for 12 years, and in church for 5, have a few songs out, and have more coming. Over the past 3 years, music has taken a backseat in my life but it is a great joy I aim to bring forefront in the near future.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There is nothing like seeing the final product after hours of work, and I genuinely love what I’ve been able to create in the past couple of years. When I was featured last year, I was primarily focused on modeling, but I have really enjoyed taking on more producer/director roles in the fashion and creative space this year, which has been a challenge, but a good one.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
When “Christy Met Hannah”:
I met Hannah Swan in 2021 at the Grace Loves Lace grand opening. I loved her outfit, and she told me the entire ensemble was thrifted, which I could not believe. She intimidated me at first, and we sized each other up but we easily accepted one another and I gravitated towards her more than anyone else at the event, which she had unsurprisingly put together. We have been tied ever since, and our friendship grew so quickly. I just had so much to learn from her, I knew it from the second we met.
When I needed a last-minute internship, I called her and she took me under her wing. We soon birthed what is now called The Style Series, and, later, a social club called Saturn Social Club. Our vision is to cultivate what we are calling the “New Seattle”, and we are each involved with the fashion, creative and entrepreneurial communities here.
