We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Frederick Lash II. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Frederick below.
Frederick, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
One of my biggest inspirations would have to be my twin sister. Ever since she was a little kid she always knew she wanted to be an artist; in any way possible. Obviously this came with a lot of black-lash from outside influences whom would suggest she go for something “safe” or “reliable”. She stood tall and followed her passions which have taken her into some amazing places. She has worked or a number of big companies like Netflix, Marvel, Amazon, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon etc. All because she found something she was passionate about and drowned herself in it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a film photographer and a tour manager all wrapped up in one. In 2014 I just finished my college basketball career and was looking for something to replace basketball with. I started to hang around other creatives and found that I really loved photography and immediately leaned into it. Started off with a Canon 7D and started second shooting weddings and just some pictures of friends. Down the road I discovered that I loved to travel and lived in a few different countries and am currently living in Germany. I wanted to specialize in taking portraits but I also wanted to incorporate traveling with my work. That’s when I linked up with my cousins who are DJs that regularly tour around the world. I initially wanted to just take photos but they convinced me to do tour management on the side as well. So I help them by keeping everything organized during our travels and that they have everything they need to have a great show; as well as taking photos for their instagram page.
Now I get to be in the lucky position of combining my two loves of travel and photography!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Definitely when you deliver the product to the clients and they absolutely love it. No better feeling than having that confirmation that you are in the right industry and that people love the work you create.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me, I don’t want to just be the guy that photographs cool and interesting people. I (humbly) want to be the photographer that the cool and interesting people are honored to have take their photos. I want my pictures to invoke emotion and to have people stare at my images for a long time; not to just scroll right pass them and have my work get lost in the void of social media.
