We were lucky to catch up with DUCHE$$ recently and have shared our conversation below.
DUCHE$$, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue music professionally when it literally saved my life. Music has been there for me throughout every emotion ever felt , every victory, every loss, it’s such a powerful form of expression. I want to be able to give people a space that’s safe and relatable a space that’s human and nonjudgmental so that they can know they’re not alone with whatever they’re going through like music has done for me. And I will do that through my music and my vision that God has blessed me with. Being able to connect with people in this way and hear how they felt after my performances made me want to go even harder. So here we are :)

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the music industry as a poet and a DJ. I’ve always had an ear and a way with words. What sets me apart from others is I’m open to being vulnerable and showing parts of my human experience people feel shamed about or too timid to talk about. I’m okay with sharing those fragile moments because if you haven’t noticed…I’m not a robot haha! I have feelings I go through trials and tribulations like life is hard and I talk about it because someone gone hear what I have to say and be like “damn me too!” That’s what it’s all about, connection. I am most proud of the evolution and development of the artist I am becoming. Not having a team is hard and that makes it hard for me to believe in myself at times but if anything I show up for myself 24/7 and I study to progress as an artist to really tap into my greatest potential. I’m really proud of myself for that. Cause it is not easy haha trust!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Be real, cut the yes men out. We need refreshing vibrations cause it’s getting dull and redundant. But in being real be compassionate about it and help out , support and help guide each other . Everyone has a table to pick where they want to eat , offer a seat. We’re better together.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That everyone will stick around and support. I used to just BANK on people’s support and be so upset when I didn’t get the same support I give . The people who will support you will support you. The people who don’t that’s cool too. That doesn’t make you lesser than, and it doesn’t change who you are. Don’t let that stop you from your dreams. Haters are supporters too! At least they real about it. HA!
