We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryanna Phimphachanh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bryanna , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Art was always an important part of my life from childhood to adulthood. I think for me it was never really a question of doing anything else. Art provided me the ability and voice to communicate how I was feeling as a child, aided me in self-expression through my teenage years, and was something that has always been on my mind. It just always felt like the right thing in my life and has brought me so much joy through the act of creating.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bryanna Phimphachanh, I was born in 2001 in Los Angeles, CA, and currently still reside here. I’m a painter and a student at ArtCenter College of Design working towards my BFA in Fine Arts.
I was previously working in both painting and sculpture however as of late I’ve been solely focusing on painting. Late last year I started developing a style of underpainting within my work where I applied several layers of thinned-out oil paint that lays under the figures. I became enthralled in the process which lead me to just painting.
I think I’m really proud of the time and dedication I put into painting, I feel like I’ve had a lot of growth from last year to now. I also recently just completed my largest painting to date which was 96 x 72 inches. It felt like a real milestone for me and I’m quite happy that I had the time and space to work at that scale.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think for me before I really wanted to prove myself to others when it came to my drive with my creative journey, however now I feel like I’m at a place where I’m just happy doing what I’m doing. Just getting to paint and test new things out has really been driving me forward lately. I’ve been enjoying getting to work larger in scale and seeing what that does to the figures in my paintings as when as how the underpainting develops and acts at that scale.
When it comes to career, post-graduation I’d like to show my work in galleries and in shows (both group and solo), so I’d say that’s my goal with my journey as of now.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is the process when I’m painting. Not always when I’m in the physical act of painting but moments where my brain is just thinking of painting and little things in life stand out to me. For example, when I’m taking small breaks from working and I see a color out in the world that I really like and I can bring that into my work. But I also do really enjoy the act of painting and finding out new things as you go. It feels rewarding when I’m working and I decide to try something out and I end up enjoying it; feeling like I’m growing and learning is always a great feeling.
