We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dana Rubin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dana below.
Dana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have had a camera in my hand since I was a child. My dad was my first photography teacher. I learned how to handle a camera, how to change the mechanics and I had a trained eye for composition. I have been taking photos for families for over 20 years in the local community. Right before Covid hit I decided it was time to live my passion fully and completely. I decided to jump in with two feet and become a portrait artist. I knew I could make it work because I had the heart behind the camera. I knew it would be a worthwhile endeavor because I was going to capture memories for people that they could cherish for a lifetime. I knew this would work out because I was going to solve the problem of mom not being in the photo. Moms are always taking the photos and never in them. My slogan was to “get mom back in photos.” I am unique because I offer so much more than the digital images from the session. I offer wall portrait artwork.
Dana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a portrait artist who cares about my clients. In fact many of my clients become my friends. From the first meeting to the delivery of artwork I take the customer on a journey. We work together to create a vision for their session, they receive guidance on their clothing choices and we execute their session as planned. I offer a wide variety of artwork and albums of their family portraits so their memories can be showcased in their home. It fills my heart and soul when I deliver the wall portrait artwork and my clients/friends hug me and even sometimes cry happy tear. Many families have never done a family portrait and they are so happy to have these images to display on the walls of their home.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I am involved the local communities and enjoy meeting new people. Meeting new families, of all different backgrounds, is exciting to me. Every family has a story to tell. I am the portrait artist that helps families tell their story with images. I also give back to non-profits by creating collaborative ways for them to raise money for their cause.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
At the beginning I had to figure out how I was going to fund the business. I pulled money from savings and bought a computer and camera equipment. I would not have been able to be successful without purchasing these tools. I quickly designed a marketing campaign and it did so well I was able to pay myself back in a matter of weeks.
