We were lucky to catch up with Daniella Reid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daniella, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
In this industry of treat making/sweets I’ve seen where under charging has been at an all time high.
The biggest challenge that the industry faces is we as treat makers are not taking the time to do a breakdown of their overall costs
It is very common for beginners to start off with sales to try to build their clientele, but miss the bottom line of making a profit
I would encourage everyone to first start out with a breakdown of how much your product is and the number one thing, don’t forget to pay yourself

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Daniella Reid, I go by Dannie which is where my business name comes from, I am a native of Florida. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. I love traveling and enjoy spending time with my family. I currently work in the trucking industry along side from running my business Dannie’s Sweets and Treats.
My business was born in 2016 after considering I wanted to make some extra money on the side. First thought was I will just do it from time to time, but after taking class after class and putting my business out there it just turned into something bigger than I expected.
I have created a menu to help my clients to decide what it is that they are looking for when considering sweets/treats for their event. This includes cupcakes, chocolate covered oreo’s, pretzels, strawberries. mini bunt cakes, cake pops. Some have no idea what they are looking for until we have a consultation and decide what works best for them.
For me seeing a smile on my clients face at there event or getting the feedback from them of how pleased they are makes it all worth it. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the best planners in South Florida.
One thing I will say is pray over your business and have a vision of what you want for you and your business and trust God he will lead and help you through your journey.
Dannie’s Sweets & Treats have had the pleasure of being seen around the world and also have been and tasted by NFL players and NBA players. I look forward to see what’s next for us.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I used my 9-5 to fund my business. I started with a set amount and then I continued to reinvest in my business with the profits I made. I would say what ever works for you go for it. What may work for me may not work for someone else.
If someone can’t use their job or career then go for it. There are many options to choose from. One can go to their savings, 9-5, donations etc. to get started.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Working with the government/city you will not get paid before hand. In business we think we get the deposit or full payment ahead of time and usually that is how it works but I had to learn the hard way.
I was contacted by a local city official office that they needed 12.5 dozen of cupcakes and it was on a short notice. I had 3 days to complete this order I was like sure I would send over the invoice for payment. This was my first time working with a city local government and had no idea this is how it worked until further in the conversation, This was one lesson I learned to always be prepared for anything that may come your way
