We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Garcia Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To achieve success, I firmly believe that one must be willing to dedicate at least 10,000 hours of focused practice, a concept explored in Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers.” In addition to hard work and persistence, luck can also play a role in achieving greatness. Personally, I have fully embraced this philosophy and wholeheartedly devote myself to my craft. This means working hard to create balance in my life. However, I most often find myself making tough decisions, saying no to other commitments, and sometimes being away from loved ones for extended periods.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My connection to the world of cinema has remained unwavering since that memorable day when I first stepped into a theater to watch “Grease.” The way the movie swept me away, engulfing me in its magic, left an indelible mark on my soul. I knew from that moment that I wanted to be part of this world.
The turning point in my journey arrived when I made the decision to pour my heart into a screenplay. This script, chronicling my personal voyage to sobriety, became a pivotal moment. Not only did I delve deep into my own life’s narrative, but it also brought me into contact with kindred spirits who saw the potential and talent within me. Their unwavering support and the nurturing environment they provided gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and into the director’s chair.
My path was far from smooth lessons learned the hard way, moments of crippling doubt, and the constant question of whether my efforts were worth the struggle loomed over me. There were instances where fear threatened to paralyze me, but I clung to my determination. These trials, rather than breaking me, unveiled the incredible strength always within me.
Through this rollercoaster, a powerful realization emerged: my voice held a crucial place within the film industry. I came to understand that my perspective, shaped by my unique experiences and outlook, brought a special quality that no one else could replicate.
Reflecting on my journey, from that mesmerizing moment watching “Grease” to where I stand today, underscores my unyielding determination, resilience, and the profound impact of storytelling. The road ahead is paved with my dedication to my craft and a steadfast belief in the power of my own voice.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A cherished goal that resides firmly in my heart is to bring my dream screenplay to life on the silver screen. This screenplay is a tale that revolves around a vibrant Cuban family.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
“Legend of El Cucuy.” is my most favorite film and it was financed by Netflix, as part of LALIFF’s inclusion Fellowship.
