We were lucky to catch up with Chun Swae recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chun, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Starting my business may have been a cake walk compared to how most business owners would say they’ve started their business. Up until I officially launched my business, I knew for a long time that I wanted to own a business. Something fairly easy to run, that everyone isn’t doing and also something that is recession/pandemic proof. After seeing a friend on instagram constantly selling a course for his business, I decided to hop onboard for a few reasons. I wanted to support my friend in his business because it was thriving! From what I saw he was working with everyone in the industry and making money. So I contacted him and purchased his digital billboard course. I was determined to start selling digital billboards. It met my requirements and as far as I knew he was the only person really grinding to sell billboards. As most things are it seems easy from the outside looking in until you’re in that person’s shoes. I thought everything would be easy until I thought “How do you advertise a product, that is advertising a product”. Sounds super simple until it’s not. Especially without any clients at the time. With a little hard work and pressure out came the gem that is my business selling digital billboard placements all across the U.S.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For anyone reading this who may not know who I am, my name is Chun Swae. I am a runway model, catwalk expert and newly added into my portfolio, a proud business owner. When I walk in the room I am well respected in my craft because of my talents on the runway and my demeanor and how I carry myself off of the runway. I’m still new to the advertising industry and got in through purchasing a course from a friend. I wanted to support their business and ultimately through purchasing the course it led me to starting my business. I sell digital billboards to people and businesses all across the country. My clients range anywhere from small businesses wanting to expand and start advertising to families who want to give their graduate a grand shoutout in the sky. My clients come to me wanting to either give a “different” and unexpected gift or to grow clientele for their businesses. Either way I provide them with a unique service catered to their wants and needs. I’m most proud of starting a business that i’m proud to say I own. I want any of my current clients and potential clients to know that whatever your needs are I will try my best to exceed your expectations and keep you coming back for many moons to come!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
This is a lesson that most people were taught and that is “The customer is always right!”. Unfortunately that is not always the case. I’ve been working since the age of 15 and have had a few customer’s that some would consider difficult. Once while dining in at a restaurant I had witnessed a customer berating a waitress. While I was not dining at their table to know the backstory, I did notice that the waitress was trying her hardest to do her due diligence to try to rectify the situation at hand. Through various experiences, I realized that blindly following the motto “The customer is always right!” can lead to a harsh conflict between customer demands and ethics. In unlearning this lesson I did learn to balance customer satisfaction with fairness and broader considerations, moving beyond this oversimplified belief.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think my reputation for having high quality standards on the runway helped to build my reputation within my market for my business. People want results not another product or service they don’t need. One of my first clients had no doubt that he needed a billboard for his business and actually had decided that he would purchase one from me the moment I started giving him personalized details based on the questions he asked. Once I told him that I could post his ad anywhere in the USA he didn’t care where his ad was posted but instead about the mathematics behind his ad being posted on a billboard. How many people will see his ad a day. How many times will the ad will flash on a billboard and all sorts of questions followed suit one after another. By being able to answer most of the questions I was asked and also being able to provide quality service, I was able to close my first client that led me to my second client due to the reputation I started building for my business.
