We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandice Pondexter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brandice , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When I initially started my business I just jumped right in . I didn’t really know what I was doing but I am the kind of person that will research EVERYTHING! So I’m the early stages of my business I didn’t have any systems in place , and I was just improvising as I went along.
I knew at some point I wanted to be able to hire employees and replicate my methods and style of esthetics . So really buckling down and creating an SOP ( Standard Operating Procedure) not only keeps me on track , but it’ll help me once I’m ready to expand .
The advice I would give a young professional would be to create the SOP and have a system in place that you can follow. Consistency produces results a lot faster than skill !
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a licensed esthetician based in Brea , California . I specialize in multi cultural skin, Acne, Hyperpigmentation , Age Management, and chemical peels . I see clients in person and virtually.
I believe in providing results driven treatments and really help my clients to understand their skin beyond just the products they use . We explore their lifestyle and goals to come up with a skincare regimen that is tailored to them.
I love to empower my clients to love and celebrate their skin at whichever stage they are in .
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think the main thing that has helped me succeed is staying in my own lane and remaining true to myself . When I started on the industry I was trying to fit the mold of what the other girls were doing. This really hindered my growth and business . Once I started to be authentic and just stay true to me , it became easier to show up for myself and my business consistently .
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The best way to grow clientele is to combine the power of social media and like grassroots style marketing . Joining local mom groups on Facebook , passing out flyer to other businesses, going to networking events. A lot of my clients have found me on Instagram. You just have to remain consistent
