Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Catalina Matamoros . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Catalina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I am currently in the process of becoming a full-time freelancer, and I find it to be an exciting yet somewhat daunting experience. This endeavor demands a high level of self-organization and curiosity. It’s important not to fear not having all the answers and to feel comfortable asking questions of those who are on a similar path.
I believe there is no definitive right answer to speeding things up; there’s always a learning curve that cannot be circumvented. Therefore, from day one, I am committed to remaining open to learning.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey there! I’m Catalina, a designer who’s all about animation and illustration. These days, I’m taking the plunge into the freelance world. I would say my work is lively, joyful, and colorful. I do editorial illustrations, for magazines, events, and others. A dream of mine would be to do children’s books and I am currently trying to break into that industry. On top of that, I whip up short film animations and put together awesome video content for brands from around the globe.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part is to show yourself to the world. I believe that sometimes is scary to be vulnerable and say this is who I am, but as an artist, your work is a conversation with the world. The more you talk the more you understand, and I find that rewarding.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I would say becoming a freelancer in a foreign country is not an easy task. There are many things that are different from the country you were born, so you need to start understanding, how the system works, how tax work, health insurance, cultural differences, and on top of that immigration procedures. So you have to adapt easily to the changes, to the demands, and learn how to navigate all these things without losing your mind. I guess having a goal at the end of the day, gives a purpose and makes the obstacle at little less daunting to navigate.
