We recently connected with Meghan Carr and have shared our conversation below.
Meghan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
I worked my previous job for over 20 years and boy was that a journey. About the half way mark during my time there I had to take an opportunity or would be forced to leave. I took that opportunity and I had no idea that I would be so miserable after. I had to move to a different location that was an hour away from my home and a $13 pay cut. I was a single mother, college student and had a small business that I had just opened a suite to work out of. I struggled the entire time that I was there. Even though I was third generation working this same job that my family worked I was still miserable. I made good money and had good benefits however, I was never doing what I loved. During those 10 years that I worked there I tried to make the best of it. But it still seemed to not fit I was had just fell into a habit of going to work because I had to and had a family to feed. During that time I still was pursuing entrepreneurship. I had to close my previous business of being a Make up artist and Lash Tech because I worked so many hours and could not devote my time I had to make my dream work some how. So decided to do a virtual business that I could run from home and work. The first one was an online plus size clothing store but didn’t do too well because I was working odd hours and could not keep up with my orders alone. Even though I love make up beauty and fashion it wasn’t really where my heart was. So that gave me a reason to dig deeper in to myself to find what was important to me and made me focus on how I could help and serve my community. I was on a long road of my spiritual journey and that helped me a lot to be able to find not just my reason but my purpose and thats where My Mystical Marketplace was born. I have always been a spiritualist growing up but I never had the courage to share with others. I was doing most of my practice alone because I didn’t have community in which I felt that I fit. Until I was grounded and rooted into my practice now. I was always told “Everything is in Divine Order” so this was a time I chose to move. I enjoy crystals, incense and herbs so I never feel like I am working while sharing my knowledge about those things. I still felt like something was missing and had to dig a little deeper and that is where Majestic Roots was born. Majestic Roots is a 501 (c) 3 that I founded in 2021. Majestic Roots is a nonprofit organization that provides support to the intellectually and developmentally delay disabled individual when they lose a parent or caregiver we also offer support to the senior caregiver. We mostly focus on the Adults and Seniors of this unseen community. By me having experience myself I feel I can offer quite a bit to this community. Being a Death Doula I am able to focus on ancestral healing and support. At this point I feel ground and happy with the development of my two ideas wrapped in one. I eventually moved away from that tired old job where I was miserable and over worked for over 20 years. The lesson that I learned is not to be afraid to move from something that doesn’t bring you joy and happiness. Finding your passion is what will fuel your purpose.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Meghan Carr and I proudly go by Iyanifa Ifatayo Oyabiyi which many on social media know me as Iya Oyabiyi. I am a mother, business owner, nonprofit founder and Priestess in an African traditional religion which goes by many names one that is commonly known as Isese Lagba. I got into my business because of experience and the now found confidence to want to share it with others. I am most proud of my drive and perseverance. My willing to never want to give up on all that I do no matter the struggle that lead me there.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Its ok to take a break and rest. You can come back to be refreshed and ready to put your all into it. My back story is how hard I was always working because I thought working harder would get me along faster.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my social media presence by always showing up. I made sure not to focus on negative topics but I stayed trending.
