Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to TAJLA. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
TAJLA, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Being in this industry is all about taking risks. Especially to get to where you want to be. I grew up in Australia, travelled to Los Angeles at age 19 and now moved to Atlanta at 26 all in the name of chasing my dreams. It hasn’t been an easy ride, and it’s come with many sacrifices. But I wouldn’t change any choice I’ve made as it’s all pushed me further to pursuing music.
TAJLA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is TAJLA. The name is a play of words on my actual name; Taylor, and also how my Croatian grandparents would spell it growing up. I had a passion for music since before I could talk and then decided to make a commitment to my dream at the age of 6 where I started taking singing lessons, learning to write music and play instruments. I have a large performing background where I have performed at festivals, bars, competitions, even musicals. When I was about 17 I decided I wanted to learn how to produce music as well. And so that was the next part of my journey. Right now I write and record all of my original music, and produce about 50% of it. Everyone who knows me personally knows me to be dedicated and passionate and if asked if they see me doing anything else.. the answer would be a hard NO. It’s always been music.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In this business you’re going to be tested a lot.. in many ways.. especially as a woman. It’s sad to say but the industry really isn’t a safe place for us and I’ve wanted to give up multiple times because of this. But the thought of giving up on something I’ve worked so hard for hurts my heart so I keep pushing. I move past all the sleezy men, all of the no’s, the non believers and know that my time is coming. It always rains before you see a rainbow. I remind myself what my goal is, to stick to my morals and my plan.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Perfection and the fact it doesn’t exist. I’m a control freak so I obsess over the tiniest details until it sounds ‘perfect’ but this is a disease as what ends up happening is I feel I can never ‘achieve’ it. My best work has always been the most raw material and when I started getting better feedback about that work.. I realised perfection IS imperfection. People connect more to something relatable, and so I started letting go of that need for my art to ‘be’ a certain way and just admire the path it chooses to take on its own.
