We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Craig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When my daughter was born, in April 2022, I was working for a major insurance company as a ‘clinical nurse reviewer’. I hated the job, but it paid the bills. And allowed me to work from home.
As my maternity leave came to an end….it was time to go back to this job. It crushed me, as it does with most parents, to have to split my time between my baby and my job.
I would get up at 4am to get work done before my baby woke up. I never fully got to be present with her.
That’s when I realized I wanted to start a business bringing new parents together & educating parents on babies + breastfeeding. So, I left my job. I took a huge risk.
And honestly? It still hasn’t really paid off. That’s the realistic side of owning a business and taking risks. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take them though.
It takes a lot of persistence and grit to own your own business. You have to motivate yourself most days. And I don’t regret taking this risk even for a second. It has taught me so much about myself & the world around me.
Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a maternal/infant registered nurse for about 6 years. Working in the hospital environment–anywhere from labor, to the OR, to the NICU, to postpartum.
I had my first baby in 2022 and quickly realized there wasn’t much support in the postpartum period, especially in the United States. As I struggled through infant sleep, breastfeeding, juggling life, and my own health….my gears started to turn.
What if I created this safe space online for new parents?
What if I made courses that helped them feel empowered on their journey? So that when baby arrived–they felt confident & didn’t consult google every 2 seconds.
I did continuing education to become a lactation counselor. Then I created both an infant first aid online course & breastfeeding online course.
My social media space is real & honest–much like me. I don’t like to talk about the ‘fluff’…I like the real nitty gritty of life. Does this get me into trouble sometimes? Maybe. But it’s who I am! 1000000% real.
As I have grown this business I have started to transition to more of a blogging/lifestyle adventure. This allows me to showcase all of motherhood and life.
I recently changed my instagram name to ‘hey, mama rach’. I am excited to embark on this new journey of sharing all of my life + educating in new and unique ways.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There can be a lotttttt of self doubt when starting a business. It can be extremely difficult to learn to put yourself ‘out there’ on social media everyday.
I constantly had this voice in my head saying ‘you’re not good enough’ and ‘no one cares rachel’.
And for many of us, we don’t have many people cheering us on everyday.
So we have to change the narrative in our heads. We have to be our own cheerleaders.
Unlearning self doubt can take time, effort, therapy….you name it. But it’s so worth it when you change the way you talk to yourself & when you believe in yourself.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Being 100% authentic & truly caring about people I engage with!
