We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erin Mooney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erin below.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
About two years ago I decided to hire a social media company to manage my socials. I felt so overwhelmed and disorganized with creating content, not to mention the time that went into it. It just made sense to let a professional take over.
Fortunately when I had made this decision I already knew which company I wanted to work with. I choose The Social Media Manager because I liked that they understood me and my company’s energy. I’m grateful I knew what I wanted and didn’t have to try multiple companies before finding them.
My biggest piece of advice to anyone who is contemplating hiring a team for their socials, is see if it makes sense. I couldn’t keep up with it, but this isn’t the case for everyone.
I also advise researching so you can be sure whoever you hire works well with you and understands your vision, vibe, voice whatever you want to call it, just make sure it’s a good fit for you and your needs. Trust, you’ll know when you find it and that’s a lot easier than working with someone who doesn’t “get it”.
Erin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Howdy y’all! I’m Erin owner and lead designer at Buckaroo Flower Co, a full service flower shop located at The Pemberton in down town Phoenix. Full service means, daily deliveries, subscriptions, special events, weddings, and workshops not limited to flowers, this means house plants too, we really do it all!
I’ve been in the floral industry for 17 years, I’ve worked many sides of the industry from smaller shops, to larger event companies, and being a buyer for a floral wholesale. Flowers really are a passion for me, it’s not just that they are stunning, but the powerful impact they have. I love being able to help others share special moments in their lives, it’s really wonderful to see what a surprise flower delivery can do for someones day and it feels pretty cool to be a part of that.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2017 I was working as a buyer for a floral wholesale, I was learning a lot of that side of the industry and made some great connections, but I wasn’t stoked on 5am clock in times and answering endless emails all day. I knew it was time to start my own company, but it felt impossible while still making a paycheck from the floral industry.
So I quite and started serving and bartending. This opened up so many doors for me that I didn’t know existed. I had my days free to meet with potential wedding clients, go to the flower markets, work on bouquets, I felt like I was now getting two days out of every one day. It was wild, this was when I started Root & Anther a wedding focused flower company that I could run out of my apartment and as long as I got my shifts covered, or time off requests in, I could build my flower business while still keeping a steady income in the evenings.
I love the hospitality industry and can still be caught running food and mixing drinks from time to time. It has allowed me to build two businesses, it has opened me up to so many wonderful people and connections, that also support and grow my flower business. I love these little pockets of community that fill up in your life.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is tricky, in the beginning with my first business I thought it needed to be just about the bouquets and had to be more serious to attract potential wedding clients. Once I started Buckaroo I just knew I wanted to keep it playful, one of the main reasons I like the name Buckaroo is because it’s playful while still paying omage to the South West so I wanted that to be felt in it’s social media presence. As far as building the audience, it came with the help of my social media team posting consistently and I guess people enjoy watching me be a goofball.
My advice would be to stick to what’s authentic to you and your brand. If you don’t want your grid to be all beige and taupe it doesn’t have to be. Be true to you and be kind and hopefully the right audience will find you.
