We caught up with the brilliant and insightful BOIIWONDERZ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, BOIIWONDERZ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I suppose one’s idea of happiness will always be different than anyone else’s, but for the most part I try to remind myself that in this moment I am happy as an artist. I never wonder what it’s like to have a regular job because I already know what that’s like. Sad and uninspired.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by BOIIWONDERZ. A creative thriving in the desolate heat-scape that is Miami. I’ve been drawing since I can remember and decided to pursue it full time after 2020. I was given the opportunity to paint a mural for a company down here and after that I never looked back. After many trials and errors and countless sleepless nights studying content creating and marketing, I was able to make my mark in the art scene down here. I’ve been blessed to paint murals all over Miami, paint live at several events, participate in Art Basel and sell my art online. I’m extremely proud of the work I’ve done so far and only wish to get bigger and better. I want people to know that my brand is to make you feel good and smile and maybe even laugh a little. I want them to look at my art and think “he must really love doing this.”
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn self-deprecation. I grew up constantly criticizing myself over every little thing and for a while it was the only way I was able to cope with my emotions. Societal conditioning and being raised in a religious household kind of does that to you. Unlearning it is still a work in progress and it still takes extreme self-reflection and self-love to sit down and look at a painting and appreciate it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Art will never die, that’s for sure. The way we view it, however, will constantly change. In the age of the internet, I was able to find so many different resources regarding content creating and exposure from so many different platforms and taking the time to actually study it all is what helped build my audience. I started posting almost every day, engaging with local artists and hash tagging every single post. Instagram and TikTok have been my main sources. People appreciate consistency and if they follow you specifically for your art, make sure that’s all your posting. Reels and videos are your best friends. Don’t get frustrated when you don’t see the numbers immediately. It takes time to build your audience, but I promise you one single post can change the trajectory of your career forever.
