We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yael Santé a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Yael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I’ve always been so happy to be a singer/songwriter. For as long as I can remember, being a musician is so authentic to who I am. I never really think about having a “regular” job. I’ve always been confident in following my passion. It’s not always and easy path and I have to work very hard to make sure my dreams come true. It’s much more fulfilling to know that I can do what I love, instead of work for someone’s else.
Yael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Neo-soul/R&B singer-songwriter. I’ve been singing since I was really young, maybe around three years old. Later on, I went to Berklee College of Music and released my first EP in 2018. Right now, I’m working on my debut album. I’m so excited for this album, because its filled with emotion and raw honesty. I hope everyone finds a piece of it to relate to.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Specifically speaking for music, I encourage people to buy music instead of stream. At the very least, buy after you’ve streamed it and know that you like it. Artist earn little to nothing from streams. By buying their music, merchandise and tickets to their shows helps allow the artist to create more music. I personally love buying LP’s. There is something so special about having music be tangible. It might be crazy to say, but what if all the streaming sites ended or went down? How would you listen to your favorite music?
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Easily, it’s seeing someone find comfort or an emotional release through my music. I tell my stories so others can have an outlet. There is nothing like someone telling me about an emotional experience they had with my music.
