We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Camaira Metz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Camaira below.
Camaira, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Overall, yes I am extremely happy to be able to pursue what I’m passionate about. But it’s not all sunshines and rainbows. To be completely honest, I think about what it would be like to have a regular 9-5 job all the time. Being a musician is extremely competitive, so I have to work other jobs in order to support myself, such as serving or little side gigs like hosting trivia at a local bar. And when you are working several jobs and trying to make music a career, it can become exhausting. This can then lead me to think, “I wonder what it would be like to work a less competitive job that pays well and provides stability?” But in the long run, I know it wouldn’t fulfill me in the same way being a musician does. It’s a tough career, but sometimes there is beauty in the struggle.
Camaira , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a local Seattle singer/songwriter who has created my own unique, genre-bending style, that incorporates jazz, pop and alternative influences. I started singing at a very young age and increasingly became more serious about it as I got older. I started writing my own music in 2016 and since then have dedicated myself to the craft. I want to know as much as possible within this career. While I prefer writing and playing music on my piano, I took up guitar and electric bass as well. I have also began to explore music production so I have a better understanding of things when I’m working with my producer. You can check out my music on all streaming platforms. I’m hopeful to be releasing a new EP by the end of 2022.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s a reward in itself being able to create on a daily basis. But a rewarding aspect to me, is when my music has a positive impact on a listener or when they can simply relate to the message I’m putting out there. I find it really wonderful to know that I’m being heard and that people are responding.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I’ve had a number people in life question me on my decision to drop out of college. There’s a lot of stigma around getting a degree and getting right to work after graduating. I think we all have to acknowledge that the college route is not for everybody. I didn’t want to spend 4 years working toward a degree I didn’t really have an interest in. Music brings me so much joy and it is something I can continue to learn about without having to go to school. It’s an ever changing career and there is always room to grow. I can live my life a little more freely and I’ve never regretted that choice.
