Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aleigh Sampson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aleigh, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
From a young age, I started to notice how deeply the environments I was in affected me. As my curiosity grew, I started to play around with adding and taking different objects and feelings in and out of spaces. It grew into a love language for me. The older I get, the more meaningful it becomes. I am humbled to get to share this with others, to invite their own essence to reflect the spaces they inhabit.
Aleigh, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Dwelling Well Design is a prodigy of an unconventional take on interior design. We take all of the fun that comes along with the interior design process, and we leave the stuffy, over the top vibes at the door. Our process reflects what we provide our clients – simplicity. We whole-heartedly believe in freeing up the gunk in people’s spaces, because it typically frees up the gunk in their lives and leads to more aliveness, more joy, and more presence.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, it’s a form of self-expression. Often times, one of the truest forms of self-expression I can contact within myself. When I have a blank canvas for a project I’m dreaming up, or a lump of clay on a wheel – there is a place I go that deeply nourishes and fills me. Momentarily, my mind quiets down and I’m fully consumed with the act of creation. The rewarding part for me, is that the actual process of creating something – whether it be a kitchen or a coffee mug, it’s influence doesn’t stop with me. Someone else gets to share in the joy of that creation. It gets to breathe life into them, after it has breathed life into me. And I think that’s pretty cool.
Question not found
I think I speak for many other creatives when I say, we are not meant to be put in a box. And by that I mean, most of us can’t consistently produce our best work with the snap of a finger (or at 9 am every single morning). Most of the creatives I know are extremely cyclical. And by that I mean, their energy levels and experiences dictate the work they put out into the world. While I do thrive off of routine, when it comes to creativity – it isn’t something I can force. Sure, there is a lot I can do to cultivate it – but it comes and it goes when it pleases. And when I am feeling inspiration, I stop what I’m doing and I try to listen to it. Because usually when I’m in that space, magic happens. And when I try to force creativity from any other place, the outcome reflects a major lack of creativity. My advice to creatives is: listen to that voice. Stop. Create. Go inward when it strikes, it is more life-giving than most things I know. My advice to non-creatives is: you are more creative than you think. If you think you aren’t – get curious. What were the types of things you loved doing as a child? What are things that have absolutely no end-game for you but bring you tremendous joy?
